Victorian Interschool Snowsports Championships
In the second last week of August, St Bede's College students - Ryan Francis (M10), Jarrah Ronan (M10), Daniel Cooper (M11) and Brady McNeil (2021 Alumni) - competed in the Victorian Interschools Snowsports Championships at Mt Buller.
Daniel Cooper competed strongly in the Snowboard GS and Snowboard Cross. In the 'Slopestyle Ski', Ryan placed 16th and Jarrah 19th, resulting in 6th place overall as a team, and qualifying them for the National Championships.
As Brady McNeil graduated from St Bede's College in 2021, he was eligible to compete in the 'Past Students 2020/21' event, where he placed 2nd in the Snowboard GS and 3rd in Snowboard Cross.
Well done to all four of our current and past students!
Australian Cross Country Championships
A very big congratulations to Alex Gibson (M12) who recently competed in the Men’s 'Under 20' 8km run at the Australian Cross Country Championships.
He placed 33rd out of 65 runners and was the 6th Victorian athlete to cross the line, running an impressive time of 30 minutes and 14 seconds.
An incredible effort; well done Alex!
Karate - WKF Jnr World Championship Selection
Thomas Kearns (M11) has been training in karate for over 10 years, and competing at an elite level in Kumite for six years. He has been a member of the Victorian team since 2018, achieving the title of 'State Champion' twice in this time.
In April this year, Tom won the prestigious Australian Open, and was selected to represent Australia in his division in the Oceania Championships in New Caledonia in May - where he won both bronze and gold medals. At the National Championships in QLD last month, Tom not only won his own weight division (giving him the title of National Champion), but also the widely contested Open Weight and Teams divisions.
Following this, Tom was selected - as one of only 24 athletes - to represent Australia at the WKF Cadet, Junior and U21 World Championships in Konya, Turkey.
Athletes receive no financial support or grants from the state or federal governments, nor from the AKF (Australian Karate Federation). As karate is a wholly self-funded sport, Tom has set up a Go-Fund-Me campaign to help with the considerable expenses to get him to Turkey. Any financial support that we are able to offer him as a College community would be very much appreciated.
