Time Management

On a school level

RECONNECT: THE IMPORTANCE OF GETTING TO SCHOOL ON TIME

It is important to be on time to school every day for a myriad of reasons. The first order of the day for every student at Cecil Hills High School is their attendance to our Connect classes where they:

  • Learn about daily school organisation (information about school programs such as incursions and excursions, changes to timetables, examinations etc).
  • Engage in targeted learning activities designed to improve student skills and outcomes in literacy, numeracy, wellbeing, and global citizenship
  • Connect with teachers and peers in a positive environment.

Students who arrive late to their Connect classes risk missing key learning time designed to help them navigate the school day successfully.

THE BIGGER PICTURE: LIFE BEYOND SCHOOL

Punctuality is a key skill that each student needs to develop as they transition from school to work and other post-school opportunities.

Students who arrive late to school on a consistent basis are developing habits that may have devastating impacts on their attitude and approach towards work and study later in life.

RECONNECT: DEVELOPING POSITIVE BEHAVIOURS FOR LEARNING

Reconnect is one of Cecil Hills High School’s whole-school initiatives designed to support students in establishing and maintaining positive behaviours for learning (i.e., getting to school on time).

Our Reconnect team, with support from our Senior Executive and Head Teachers, is working hard to support students who have been arriving late to school and our students are responding well.

As part of this initiative, we have been collecting baseline data throughout Weeks 1 and will continue to do so in Week 2 of Term 3 to further understand the reasons behind late arrival at Cecil Hills High School and to establish viable support systems that will support student wellbeing.

Check out the tables below, which reflects a steady drop in the numbers of late arrivals throughout Week 1 of Term 3, 2022:

A SUPPORT SYSTEM FOR ALL STUDENTS

Finally, our Reconnect team is currently at the consultation stage of our move towards the relaunch of the Reconnect Flowchart.

The flowchart is designed to clearly outline the tiered support system, which will be available for all students who arrive late to school with targeted support for habitual offenders.

We look forward to sharing this flowchart with the school community.

TOP REASONS FOR LATE ARRIVAL

STRATEGIES YOU CAN USE TO ADDRESS LATE ARRIVAL

  1.      Be aware of bell times. Remember:

  • First bell goes at 08:30am – This means start making your way to your Connect class.
  • Second bell goes at 08:35am – This means you should be outside your Connect classroom. Your teacher will let you in.

2.     Set your alarm before you go to bed.  Set multiple alarms if you must.

3.     Sleep earlier. Your alarm clock has a higher chance of working its magic if you get          enough sleep.  Eight hours is the recommended amount of sleep needed for                    school-aged students.

4.     Leave your house earlier. Leave before 8:00am.  One of the best ways to beat the            relentless Frederick Road morning traffic is by leaving your house earlier.

These strategies may sound very basic but as Brad Stevens once said, “When you                 consider the consequences of not doing the little things, you realise that there are no           little things.”
