Doncare Food Drive

Dear families, parents, and students at Doncaster Secondary College,

Below is a Food Drive initiative developed by Year 11 VCAL students:

What is the event

DSC Intermediate VCAL has teamed up with Manningham organisation, Doncare, to organise a food drive, intended to help struggling families affected by COVID-19, domestic violence or poverty. A food drive would really help many families with hunger and bring smiles to their faces, and we need your help!

This food drive will run over the next couple of weeks until Nov 19th.

How you can get involved:

The food drive accepts a variety of non-fresh foods, such as:

  • Tinned/canned food
  • Packeted snacks
  • Pasta, spaghetti, 2 min noodles, rice (1kg or less)
  • Coffee/tea and biscuits
  • Ready to make foods
  • Sugar, cooking oil, flour
  • Cereals and long-life milk

The food drive is also accepting non-food items like dog/cat food, toilet paper, shampoo/conditioner and dishwashing liquid!

Note that the food drive isn’t accepting fresh food, only non-perishable foods that don’t require refrigeration.

Where you can drop off the items:

Cardboard boxes will be available in the Main staffroom for school staff, and the Year 7, Middle School and Senior School Offices for students to drop off.

If everyone gave 1 item, we would be making a great donation. Please consider donating to the food drive, as it would really help struggling families.

Thanks,

Matt Jenkins, Bayley Jansons and Nathan Salahas

VCAL Project - MS Readathon

Last term, VCAL students - Marcus, Adam, Ava and Michael - organized and registered our school for the MS Readathon. All throughout August, students were invited to read as many books as they could (including online books) to raise funds for kids who have a parent living with Multiple Sclerosis.

Our VCAL team has written a message to our DSC community.

We would like to take this opportunity to personally thank everyone who participated and for all your hard work during this year’s MS Readathon. Our aim was to encourage kids to read books - and hopefully form a lifelong love of reading in the process - and raise money for vital services that will make a difference in the lives of people with multiple sclerosis.

For 43 years now, the MS Readathon has brought together these two ideas, and has had such an impact on so many lives. None of it would be possible without the commitment of parents such as yourself. Last year, students raised amazing amounts to help fund programs like our upcoming MS Family Camps and Family Fun Days, which are vital for young people with a parent living with multiple sclerosis (MS).

More than 25,000 people are living with multiple sclerosis in Australia. This money will help people with this chronic disease to access vital services and information which will help them to live as independently as possible. Furthermore, the money raised helps fund essential services for those living with MS, one service being the popular MS Family Camps and Fun Days. Services such as these camps help bring kids together so that they can feel understood and form friendships with each other.

“Doncaster secondary college”, the event coordinators said “these services aren’t possible without the generous and ongoing support from you”. Thank you once again for all of your hard work this year raising a total of $79. Without it, the MS Readathon wouldn’t have been the success that it has been.

From myself, and all of the MS Readathon team, we hope you’ve had as much fun as we have, and we hope to see you back again next year. And we hope as we graduated we have made a difference in the work we have done here.

Thank you,
Marcus, Michael, Ava and Adam
