From the 5/6 Classroom

Mathematical Olympiad

Each year at Boroondara Park our students compete in this problem solving competition against other schools from across Australasia. We currently select four teams to compete - students are selected from grades 4, 5 and 6 based upon their ability in a diagnostic problem-solving test conducted in-house.

This year, despite disruptions to on site learning, the competitions were able to be completed; much credit must go to all students and staff involved for their enthusiasm and commitment to the program.

We have three teams from each of grade 4, 5 and 6 who compete in the Maths Games competition. This is in essence an entry point for talented problem solvers and allows students to be taught and then tested upon a particular aspect of problem solving.

The Maths Olympiad Competition sees a team of twenty students compete in a series of high order problem solving tests that challenge them to think with originality and flexibility whilst utilizing a range of problem solving tactics and skills.

This year’s team achieved strong results and can be rightly proud of their efforts, ultimately placing 84th out of 795 entrants.

Special mention goes to the following students who achieved a result in the top 10% of all students competing: David Yang, Tim Li, Joyce Yu, Lucas Weingartner, and the top scoring student from BPPS, Jayden Lim.

My thanks and congratulations to all the students involved in the program this year.
