From the Foundation Classrooms
Maths: Location and Transformation
Toy Hide and Seek
Foundation students have been busy exploring Location and Transformation. One fun activity they completed was Toy Hide and Seek. Children had to think of some good hiding spots around their house and garden, and share these hiding spots with a toy. They took photos of their toy hiding in the different locations. Children were asked to describe the different locations of their toy using words such as above, below, in front of, behind, inside, outside, near, next to, between and so. Check out the photos below to view some of the great work completed.
We're Going on a Bear Hunt
Following on from Toy Hide and Seek, children explored the picture story book We're Going on a Bear Hunt written by Michael Rosen and illustrated by Helen Oxenbury. Children chose one illustration from the story, and added a voice recording explaining where the characters were located in the illustration. Have a listen to the wonderful work of Dilan in FKJ.
Toy Obstacle Course
The next activity involved children exploring the language of direction. Children used materials from around their home to build an obstacle course for a toy. They then recorded a video of themselves moving their toy through their course, using language such as forwards, over, through and around to explain the direction their toy was moving.
Bee Bots
The return to on site learning has seen Foundation students take their learning in this area further. In the classroom, children have been loving tinkering with Bee Bots. A Bee Bots is a programmable floor robot that allows children to explore directional language and programming in a fun and engaging way. There has been lots of excitement as the children learn to navigate their Bee Bot around different obstacles in the classroom, applying their knowledge of Location and Transformation as they do so.
