Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Carers,

'You are not far from the kingdom of God'

One of the scribes came up to Jesus and put a question to him, ‘Which is the first of all the commandments?’ Jesus replied, ‘This is the first: Listen, Israel, the Lord our God is the one Lord, and you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: You must love your neighbour as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.’  Mark 12:28-31

On Sunday, the Gospel reading for Mass really sums up all we are called to be as part of the Catholic community here at St Joseph’s. Jesus makes clear the need for us to love God with our whole being and that love requires us to love others in the way we love our own self.

The Gospel values that we hold ourselves to don’t require perfection but a call to discern and reflect on these values in our decision making, encounters with each other, and actions. This is how we grow in our striving to be examples of Jesus Christ in the world and for the world.

Our students grow each day in learning what it is to love God and others. Loving others as you love yourself can be a very real challenge for children when they are naturally more ego-centric according to their level of development. They learn about love for others through:

  • Family life
  • Religious Education lessons
  • school prayer and liturgical life,
  • PB4L
  • personal development lessons
  • social and emotional learning
  • general interactions and
  • the experience of their daily life at St Joseph’s.

This week we have seen in very practical ways the love of others at St Joseph’s as staff welcomed students back to school, as parents supported their children to return to school, and as students helped each other to again be confident in the classroom and with their friends.

There has been a sense of sacredness for each child, especially those who have been in need of extra help and in need of healing and comfort. The Benedictines describe this love as a 'hospitality of the heart.’

We can see all of this in the life of St Mary MacKillop as we continue the very long tradition of the Sisters of St Joseph here at St Joseph’s in 2021. All of us have been challenged in new ways this year and I encourage all families to contact teachers, Mr Aguilera, or myself if your child needs any extra care at any time.
