School Council

School Council Report

At last week’s school council meeting, progress on the Mackellar Curriculum Map was detailed to councillors.  This map has required an enormous level of work from the staff throughout the year and is a testament to their skill and determination.  It details the ways in which all curriculum areas of the school are covered, it maps out the curriculum over the seven years of schooling, and skilfully intertwines the teaching of capabilities through an inquiry-based process for learning. This map will take affect from next year and the staff are to be congratulated for the tremendous work on this document.

Also at last week’s meeting, progress on the continual upgrade of our school was discussed. To date this year, we have replaced the carpet in the hallways of the main building, seen the construction of two new playgrounds, the refurbishment of the demountable buildings, the landscaping of the area outside the grade prep classrooms, the construction of garden beds throughout the school and the installation of shutters for the canteen. In the coming weeks and months the male staff toilets will be refitted, the roof of the main building will see some significant repairs and the outside of the entire school will be painted making it look much fresher and more appealing to all. A mammoth effort on behalf of the Buildings and Grounds team of council, and the facilities teams at the school.

Finally at council, a number of curriculum policies were ratified last week which all form part of the curriculum map. This is all very timely as next year is a year of review for our school. Every four years each school undertakes an independent review to gauge how they are progressing. A crucial part of that is a documented curriculum with supporting policies to underpin that.  Thanks to the Education sub-committee, we are well and truly up to date through their ongoing efforts.

If you are interested in school council, please let us know.  Some of our councillors, me included, will finalise our time on council as our children move off to high school. It is always a good sign to see new parents on council who can continue with the good work undertaken by their predecessors. Early next year, nominations will be sought for school council.  We would love to have your name on that list!
