Year Six

Persuasive Writing

During Remote Learning over the past 2 weeks, the Year 6 students have been learning techniques for using persuasive language in their writing. The purpose of persuasive language is to persuade the reader or listener to agree with what the writer or speaker is saying.

We are thrilled that the students have incorporated some of these strategies in their reflections of their highlights from Term 3 and Term 4.

There is no doubt that Friday’s cooking classes have been overwhelmingly popular as you will discover after reading below!

Cooking on Fridays is the part of my week I most look forward to. I love waking up on a Friday morning, exhilarated for the Cooking, and hastily getting my ingredients together, pondering what we are going to cook. My favourite things so far that we have made are The Apple Turnovers, which were delectable and flavoursome, and the rich, flavourful Vietnamese Rice Paper Rolls.

The Cooking is entertaining and I love seeing everyone else's creations, and finding out what distinctive and different ingredients other people have added. The recipes that we cook are delicious as well as unique and enjoyable to make. I usually save the savoury cooking for lunches and the sweet things for snacks and desserts. Although I am excited to go back to in person school, I will be disappointed to discontinue the Cooking lessons that I relish so much.

I personally really love the Friday cooking since it feels like a big break after a long hard week. It is really fun too but the one problem is that since I am in 6A we have Japanese straight afterwards at 10:00am, so I don’t normally have any time to enjoy the food when it is just taken out of the oven. But it's always fun making the food.

Personally my favourite food that we cooked was the sausage rolls and my family loves them too. I have been trying to find the recipe online for a while now since it's so good!

Every week we do a FUN FRIDAY COOKING!!! There are always yummy, delicious foods every week that we all make together. It is always a positive start to our day. I love doing this because every week we can try something new that we may have never tried before.

It is also a chance to get together as a year level and do something that is exceptionally fun and to share what we have made and to enjoy it with your family.

A while ago the year 6s did a project where they researched and looked into a country. This was really fun because we got to design and present our presentation any way that we wanted.

This was not only fun, but exciting because we got to learn and hear about our own county that we presented, but then we got to listen to our peers and learn about their countries. I think that this was really good because we could learn about different countries and also work on our skills of speaking in front of people even though it was just on a screen.

Over all I found this very fun and I loved working on this.

Kuba T – 6A

Earlier this term we each did a presentation about a country of our choice. I chose to do Italy and I learnt a lot. In the task we were told to make up 15 questions about our chosen country and make a PowerPoint with researched answers. We could also add some additional facts.

We then presented our presentation to a few classmates and our teacher and we received feedback from everyone in the group.

I have loved cooking on Fridays especially because we get to learn easy and sometimes healthy foods to cook and if we’re lucky we might get Mr Plowright teaching with Mr Ross.

We have learned so many things from cooking class like 2 ingredient dough or pork gyozas and even weet-bix slice. This week we are leaning how to make heathy, well not so healthy, muesli bar slice. I am  so excited for these because I love muesli bars, especially with chocolate chips!

I am very thankful that we can do this because it's so much fun and in the end you get a really yummy snack. I think it it's the best project we have ever done in home learning.

Wow, I did not expect for this lockdown to last as long as it’s lasting. Most people are so sick of it. Especially my family. It’s not fair for anyone. When I go for a walk with a friend we feel scared and we really shouldn’t. This lockdown is lasting forever but the Year 6 teachers are doing a really great job at making homeschooling fun.

They add in activities like Pilates which I really enjoy and cooking on Fridays which is super fun. I feel for the teachers because it’s always the same kids that have their cameras on. In real life the teachers would be able to see everyone but now they can only see about 10 or even less people. That’s not much compared to 24. But even though that happens they always have a massive smile on their faces.

To be honest my favourite activity has been Friday cooking. It always has a great turnout of kids and it makes everyone smile and kind of forget about the stuff that’s going on outside. I have done most of the cooking. I didn’t make the popsicles just because Mum or Dad didn’t have time to run down to the shops. Otherwise I have loved doing it. I now know how to make the best dumplings and apple turnovers. It’s the thing I look forward to every week. I keeps me motivated to know we are doing something fun on Fridays.

Fridays are probably my favourite day. We have cooking in the morning and spelling afterwards, then we eat what we made during recess, then we jump back online and start the games and quizzes. My favourite’s Kahoot.

I am really, really looking forward to being back at school but a part of me will miss online learning. When we go back we won’t be able to do the quizzes or the cooking which will be sad but we will be able to be outside and working with friends which is always the best. Especially because it’s our last year of primary school.

With doing the Mystery Suitcase project for Inquiry during Remote Learning, I learnt new things about cultures and was able to explore OneNote and PowerPoint, improving my skills on technology which is essential in these times. I was able to review my classmate’s work as well. You cannot tell me you could not want to do this and undoubtedly it was a great experience to present in a new way.

On the last week of term 3, we had the amazing opportunity to have a Zoom call with a Paralympian!

Her name is Al Viney and she went to the para Olympics this year for rowing! Her hand was injured in an accident, so she uses a modified glove to help the oar stay in her hand. She talked to us about the difficulties she had before she found her passion in rowing! Before her accident she loved rowing! She would do it as much as possible and really enjoyed it!

After her accident that led to her hand not moving properly, she had to stop since nobody thought she could do almost any sport since she had a disability! It took her 8 years to find out that she actually could still participate in sport! After only a few months of practising rowing, she got selected on the national rowing team, which then led to her becoming a member of the Australian Para Olympic rowing team!

She talked about how you should never let anyone tell you that you can't do something, or that you're not good enough! She said that when she got selected on the Para Olympic rowing team she met another girl that was also named Al! After a little while they became good friends and practised hard to try and get on the same rowing team together! In the end only Al Viney made the team, but her friend still cheered her on!

In year 6 2021, being in remote learning our teachers have had to think up a few fun and interesting tasks for us to do every now and then.

The tasks have been either educational or fun, and they consist of talking to a Paralympian (Al Viney) about her story and what happened to her as well as a sleep wellness program where some people from the Bayside Council Services had a talk about some tips and tricks to get to sleep.

The one I will be talking about is the cooking classes each Friday morning run by Mr Ross. Each Friday it is always something new and interesting. As fun as the cooking is, it's also amusing watching the teachers argue over the Teams calls.

We have made a lot of delicious things over these calls. Last Friday we made a zucchini slice for our families, which was somehow healthy and delicious all in one. Most year 6 students are participating in the cooking and loving it.

Noah – 6C

Every Friday morning on our class call, we quickly mark the roll and then we enter the magnificent meeting of five Star meals from different cultures, for example from dumplings to pizza and pizza to pie. The deliciousness of the food is immeasurable so if you're lucky enough to have a sibling in year six, prepare for your taste buds to go ‘Boom’! You'll be begging for more. So when you're offered something from year six, take it.

Another thing, when you're baking with the teachers, usually Mr Ross forgets that we are cooking food, not making a mess! If you had a machine to clean ingredients off someone, you would have enough stuff from just Mr Ross to make a whole five tier cake! The food also looks delicious. I remember when I made something and I gave my brothers a try they kept on asking me for more.

You should actually try to make something from these recipes or try cooking with year sixes!

Julia – 6D

We were lucky enough to be able to talk to a Paralympian called Al Viney.  At the time she had just come back from the Paralympics and was in hotel quarantine. She talked to us about her disability and her time in Tokyo.  Al Viney is a rower and been rowing since she was a kid. She was a member at her local club and had many friends with her. Then when she was 18 in 2010 on the night of her year 12 formal she was involved in a high speed car crash caused by a drunk driver. She woke up with the smell of petrol and people screaming and leaning over her.

She later found out that she had injured her left elbow, forearm and hand leaving her with impairments in her arm. She thought her dreams of becoming a rower were over so instead she got a Bachelor of exercise and sport science (sports nutrition) from Deakin University and worked as a sport scientist and strength and conditioning coach in Geelong.

Then in 2018 she was asked if she had considered becoming a Paralympian. From there on she trained with friends, team mates and was invited to join the Australian Senior Para-Rowing Team in February 2019. She then placed fourth in the world at her first World Championships, in the bow of her selected boat class qualifying a place for Australia for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

She told us that what you walk past is what you are willing to accept. She inspired lots of us including me to never give up and chase your dreams.

Cooking in the kitchen every Friday is  not only fun, it is delicious!

It is also very entertaining with Mr Ross, Mr Arnold, Ms Carter and Mrs Badley and sometimes Cora (Mr Arnold’s daughter) and Mr Plowright.

The first food we cooked was the Milo balls. I thought they would turn out really bad but they were amazing. Even my sister who doesn't like chocolate or Milo loved them. So I've continued cooking with the rest of year 6 and even when I don't cook, I've enjoyed listening to their humour and laughs.

I think we all deserve Zooper Doopers!
