Year 5 News

Welcome Back

We welcomed our students back into our online classrooms last week after a relaxing break at home over the holidays. We have started the term positively, and are looking forward to being back onsite in a few more weeks. The countdown is definitely on!

We have commenced a new Unit of Inquiry examining the transdisciplinary theme ‘Sharing the planet’ and the central idea ‘Significant events affect the balance of an ecosystem’.

Last week, we launched into this unit, inviting students to explore the weird and wonderful animals around the globe, celebrating the beauty in an ugly or unusual animal. Students presented an informative summary in class with a verbal presentation and accompanying PowerPoint. This was a great learning opportunity for us all to share together, learning about some really amazing creatures such as the red lipped batfish, hellbender, aye-aye, unicorn fish, goblin shark and the very popular blob fish!

We really enjoyed the enthusiasm from students sharing their knowledge and teaching us all something new.

We were extremely fortunate to join a webinar hosted by Parks Victoria on Friday discussing the biodiversity of birds in our state. This was a wonderful, interactive session. We learned about the different ecosystems around Victoria and the birds that rely on these ecosystems for their survival. We looked at ways to help local birdlife by participating as citizen scientists with the Aussie Backyard Bird Count and through measures such as planting more trees, bushes and creating bird boxes to increase vital resources for birds.

The Aussie Backyard Bird Count is a fabulous way to become involved in your local community and we encourage families to participate.

We are very fortunate at BNPS to be home to some local tawny frogmouths, and have even seen some beautiful black cockatoos on the grounds recently. It’s National Bird Week from 18-24 October, to find out more visit https://www.birdlife.org.au/get-involved/whats-on/bird-week

All this exposure to nature has inspired us to visit a few LiveCam animal sites, providing the opportunity to see some breathtaking nature from around the world.
