Year Four

Term 4

Year 4 has started with a bang! We have hit the ground running remotely with some cooking to keep the students engaged. They produced some delicious tea-cake and muffins last week!

Today is camp day for the children. Unfortunately thanks to good ol’ Covid, we have missed camp second year running, but we wanted the students to enjoy some of the experiences. So today they have made damper with their teacher in Teams online, read to self by torch-light, written a narrative to share in small groups and built a hut! Best damper recipe ever thanks to Mrs Barratt!

Maths

Maths has seen the introduction of fractions this term. Today the students have been asked to go on a “fraction hunt” to find parts of a whole and represent fractions in real life. Our cooking has also incorporated this.

Our Unit of Inquiry this term names the Central Idea, “People communicate by expressing themselves in many different ways”, with a focus on the media and advertising. Students are learning to be critical thinkers instead of passive consumers, while they learn the tricks that advertisers use to persuade us to buy their products.

Persuasive Writing

This has lead us into this term’s Learning Task which is a persuasive writing piece on advertising BNPS to the incoming Prep families. Students have constructed their three arguments, forming the main body of the text, an introduction and a title. We are working next week on our conclusion and putting it all together. Here are a couple of drafts so far:

BNPS stands for Best Northern Primary School! Nah, I'm kidding its stands for Beaumaris North Primary school. It's located in Beaumaris. I have been at this school for nearly half of my life and I've never doubted it! It has all sorts of great opportunities for kids and not only that every day I wake up on weekdays and the first thought that comes to my mind is this school! It's filled with great, kind teachers especially the year 4 ones. Over 600 kids attend this school every day in their attractive red and green colours. These are just some of the reasons why I think BNPS is a great education for kids and not only that it's super fun! Here are some more reasons why I think you should choose BNPS!

Firstly in Prep it's not only making friends, Prep celebrates the first 100 days of Prep. This is a day where all kids come to school and have a party where you get to do all sorts of fun activities.

Secondly in Year one you get to visit Werribee Zoo towards the end of the year and you also get to experience your first oral presentation.

In year 2 you're lucky enough to get the experience of going to an IMAX cinema. This is an excursion where you visit a cinema but not just an ordinary cinema at this cinema you get to wear snazzy 3D glasses and you see everything in 3D, cool right?

Year 3 is full of all sorts of fun things but one of the best things is working on the Shark tank presentation. Now don't worry I don't mean you see a massive shark in a tank this is where everyone in your class creates a product and tries to persuade your class into voting for you ( well come to that later) using a Powerpoint. Then your class votes on what they liked the idea of most. After everyone has presented their products to the class and everyone's voted, your teacher will tell you the top 4 winners and those people get to become the CEO of their product. You then get grouped into teams and get given jobs, soon after that you present these products to the office ladies along with your teams Powerpoint! I was lucky enough to be making the brochure.

Year 4 you get the experience of your very first camp and also are lucky enough to visit Captain cooks cottage which is a place  surrounded by a beautiful garden and have a picnic there. Along with that you get to visit the Immigration museum and learn about a bunch of things about the first settlers in our land.

And I'm looking forward to Year 5 camp seeing I missed out this year due to Covid-19.

In Year 6 you get the opportunity of camp and many inter school sports.

On top of all that every year you get a choice to run for Student Action Team (SAT). Which is an opportunity for kids do present why they think they should get chosen for the SAT team. Your year level then votes and after all that 4 kids in your year level get chosen to do things for the school like have fun dress up days, raise money for charity, crazy hair days, footy day and much more.

Return to School

We look forward to seeing the children back onsite on Tuesday 26 October. Until then we will continue to keep children busy and hopefully engaged.

We are very proud of the Year 4 students and their resilience and adaptability in these trying times. When we are back in the classroom our focus will be on social and emotional wellbeing and reconnecting. We have group work and team sport planned to build back to what we knew as normal and to encourage those peer relationships.

We also want to sincerely thank all parents for their support, encouragement and positivity. Before your child starts school you are known as their, “First Teacher”.  Then the reins are meant to be handed over to their “School Teachers”.

We know it hasn’t been an easy job, especially for those who are juggling work from home too. However, our friends at the Resilience Project constantly tell us to focus on what we have, rather than what we don’t. So maybe (on the good days!) we should regard it as a privilege to see our children learn and grow first hand in the safety of our homes.
