Being Well at Magill

How to tackle current trends in the school yard

Welcome back to our final term for 2021! We hope you enjoyed a great break with your family and got out and about to see our wonderful state, even though the weather wasn't the best.

On returning to school this term we have been presented with a number of children who are replicating the games from the Netflix series Squid Game. It is alarming that so many children are aware of the show, and are wanting to play games which simulate death when someone is 'out'. It is important to approach this from all angles, and the article below provides great support for families and educators alike when approaching conversations with children.

While you may feel that your Netflix account is secure and you have home WiFi security settings to block access to inappropriate websites, children are also able to access information via Instagram and the very popular Roblox which we know many children access and play within. It's imperative you are aware of what your child can access through all applications and games that they engage with to support them to make appropriate choices dependent on their age.

At a school level, we will continue to discuss the inappropriateness of dying in game play, however, as with all aspects of learning, the most successful outcomes are achieved when we approach this from both school and home.
