Feast of Saint Luke. St. Luke is the author of the third Gospel, a companion of St Paul as we see in today’s first reading and some say a doctor, the ‘dear physician’ to whom St. Paul refers at the conclusion of his Letter to the Colossians. It does appear that Luke gives more physical details about the illnesses cured by Jesus than do the other Gospel writers.

In his Gospel, Luke recorded for all time elements of Jesus’ teaching that are important for every generation to remember.

In Luke’s Gospel, we see how Jesus embrace all people, rich and poor, Jew and Gentile, male and female.

In Luke’s Gospel, we see Jesus calling people to repentance and the rehabilitating gift of forgiveness exemplified in the parable of the Prodigal Son.

In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus calls us to show compassion to all who cross our path as does the Good Samaritan in Jesus’ parable recorded only in Luke.

These are Gospel truths that can get lost today as we tend to make Jesus exclusive rather than inclusive, as though the Lord likes only ‘our kind’ of people. We can make Jesus’ forgiveness as restricted as our own tends to be. We can make Jesus’ compassion as limited as ours tend to be, given only to the chic minority of the hour rather than to every need we meet.

St. Luke gave his life for Christ and that is his greatest act of witness to the Lord. But the Gospel he wrote is also a great act of witness that has nourished and challenged Christians for centuries.

In St. Luke’s Gospel, Jesus calls us to leave behind narrowness, self-absorption, a compassion constricted only to those who think as we do, and invites us to enter a larger world of His own heart and love. His is a world where compassion is free to all in need, where our vision of the future embraces all people, and where we respect people who think and believe differently than we do.

This is not an easy world to construct but it is a world where the spirit of Christ is set free. Luke shows us Jesus Christ as the person we are all called to be.

Mary, our Good Mother, pray for us.
St. Marcellin Champagnat, pray for us.
St. Mary of the Cross, pray for us.
St. Luke, pray for us.
And may we always remember to pray for one another.

Marist Youth Ministry Year 10 Solidarity Forum

On Tuesday 12 October, The Marist Youth Ministry Team held a Year 10 Forum. The event would see three Marist schools from across Brisbane attend and meet throughout the day (Mount Maria College, Mitchelton, Trinity College, Beenleigh and Marist College Ashgrove).

Held at the Marist Centre on our College grounds, the event was a great success featuring games, activities and opportunities for connection and sharing between students in a sociable manner.

Facilitated by the Marist Youth Ministry team (MYM), the day focused solely on helping students understand the place of justice and solidarity in all aspects of Marist life. The 5 students that attended on behalf of the College were Ben Kelly, Thomas Rees, Jack Fogarty, Archie Bathe and Alessandro Jorquera.
