Sport News

Mr Luke Caplick

Last Friday evening we celebrated the achievements of our Open Track and Field, 1st XIII Rugby League, 1st V Basketball and 1st IV Tennis teams at the Queensland Cricketers Club. It was a fitting way to acknowledge our open athletes and reward those students who have made significant contributions to our Sports Program. We were fortunate to have Matt Gillett, Scott Prince and Paul Dyer from the Broncos come along and be our guest speakers on the night.

Matt Gillett played 200 NRL premiership matches for the Broncos, 20 Origins for QLD and 14 games for Australia, Gillett achieved almost everything in the game after debuting in 2010. Gillett now works full time for the Broncos and will join the Broncos Game Development team in 2022 to coordinate a brand-new program in the inner-city region.

Scott Prince played 300 NRL games during his career, he also played four games for the Indigenous All-stars, five games for the QLD State of Origin team, and four games for Australia. His achievements include: 1998 - Rookie of the Year; 2005 - Inaugural Grand Final Captain for Wests Tigers, Dally M Captain of the Year and Clive Churchill Medal winner; 2007 - Inaugural Captain of the Gold Coast Titans; 2008 - RLIF Team of the Year (halfback) and 2010 - Dally M halfback of the year.

Both former players conveyed a number of important messages to the boys talking about the many hurdles they overcame to make it at the highest level. Hard work and dedication were the distinct messages they expressed that led to their success and the parents, coaches and students hung off every word. We were very grateful that the Brisbane Broncos Rugby League Club supported us in having their presence at our special night.

Paul Dyer is currently the Brisbane Broncos Game Development Manager and has extensive experience in coaching, specifically in the women’s game. He was Head Coach of the Australian Women’s Rugby League (Jillaroos) World Cup-winning team, winning the 1st ever world cup for Australia and breaking a 14-year reign for New Zealand in 2013; The Broncos NRLW Head Coach in 2018, setting up, recruiting and winning the Broncos inaugural NRLW Premiership and was a member of the coaching staff that won the 1st and only QLD under 20’s State of Origin Series.

Paul spoke passionately on the night about the Broncos and the opportunity he’d been given in the women’s game as a coach after being a former Broncos player in the younger grades. Paul’s messages included ensuring you look after your health and your personal brand as these are the most important elements to ensuring lifelong success. Professional sport is hard to make and even harder to make a living out of, so it is important everyone is planning for something other than a professional sporting career because the statistics on those that make a living from professional sport are less than 1%. So many great messages that the boys, and parents took away from their presence on the night.

Whilst we were very fortunate to have such a high calibre of guest speakers who spoke brilliantly, our purpose was to reflect on our Term 3 sporting seasons and recognize the best athletes from each of our respective Term 3 sports. The following students were awarded trophies on the night:

Basketball

Most Improved – Ethen Tsiamalili

Marist at QLD All Schools Track and Field Championships

Following on from the success of the AIC Track and Field season the team were offered the opportunity to nominate for the QLD All Schools State Titles. After 2 days of high-quality track and field at the QLD State Athletics Facility, the Marist squad had some excellent results from the 15 Years-Open squads over the weekend. Despite a slightly smaller team due to several injuries from AIC there were great performances and a number of national qualifiers.

Medallists and Finalists who were in Top 8 included:

  • Lee Martin   - Won Gold Medal 15 Year Shot Put (15.95m), Bronze in 15 Years Javelin (52.16m-national qualifier)

  • Note all medallists receive automatic qualification in their event for the Australian Athletics Championships in April 2022. Well done to the boys listed above.
  • The middle-distance team continued their good form competing with the best while our throwers also showed they are amongst the elite in the state.

Finalists

Cody Radman - 5th 15 Years Shot Put 14.26m

Sam Brassington - 7th 15 Years Javelin 42.88m

Recent Old Boys (U20)

Jack Lafferty 26th 100m (12.7)

This is a great result with many of the team having been to previous State All Schools Championships while others were experiencing the event for the first time. Regardless of individual results, the experience will hold them all in good stead for season 2022.

Opportunity (10-14 years)

Following on from the State All Schools Track and Field 15yrs-Open Track and Field results, the coaching team encourage all athletes in the 10-14 Years that placed well at AIC to consider nominating for the QLD All Schools Championships on October 30-31 (Entries close 9:00am, Monday October 25). Competing at this level often gives the confidence to build for the following season. If any questions please contact the Primary or Secondary Track and Field Coaches/Coordinators or Mr Rob Martin who can provide details. (Enter at Queensland Athletics (qldathletics.org.au)

Well done to Angus and James.

We are now entering into Week 3 of Term 4, and it is fantastic to see so many future Marist College Ashgrove Students of 2022 attend training this term. We are slowly building into the season with AIC only 140 Days away. It is not too late to join our training squads; please see the link below to this week’s schedule.

Tennis – Mr Andrew Ward

What a great week we have just had. Although not the biggest turnout for the reintroduction of the “Marist Open Singles Championship” but that did not stop the quality of tennis that was on offer. Our players ranged from Year 7 through to Year 12.

It was quite evident from the start the older boys were not going to get it all their own way. Matches were played in great spirit between the boys and we can see some stars in the making.

The competition this year was run with two round-robin groups with the highest-ranked players moving on to the semi-finals and then the final. We had some very improved players in which we saw Isaac McDonnell really pushing our No.1 Year 7 player Fletcher all through their match. Isaac was holding his own trailing very closely on the scoreboard until an injury forced him to default. It was a great match to play and also see how much you have improved in such a short period of time. The private lessons are really paying off.

In our first semi, we had Liam Webb v Frank Baker with Liam winning through to the final 6-3 6-3. In the second semi, we saw Fletcher Wessling v Lachlan Braithwaite with Lachlan getting the result 4-6 6-1 10-5 in a close match going to a 3rd set tie break.

The scene was set for a showdown between the two boys in some very oppressive heat conditions.

After a tough first set going 7-6 to Lachlan, the heat become too much for Liam unfortunately not being able to continue leaving Lachlan a very-deserved winner of not only the prizes on hand but also having his name engraved on our singles champions trophy and have his name recorded in history as “THE OPEN SINGLES CHAMPION 2021”. Please feel free to congratulate our champion and commend him on his hard work and fantastic win.

From all of us here in MCA Tennis congratulations and well done.

For those of you who missed out, we will be holding the 2022 Championship at the end of Term 2 which will also be part of our lead up and trials for AIC season Term 3. We thank all who attended and look forward to next year’s event.

On a lighter note, it is great to see our family members down utilising the courts under their memberships and helping to prepare our next generation of players here at Marist. Just a reminder that members can access the lights for nighttime play with a charge of only $10.00 per hour. Daytime is free of course. We will be looking at a booking system online for all members.

Our Gate entry system is very close to arrival and once up, we will endeavour to get your swipe card access out to all members. Thank you to all of our new members and we hope you enjoy all the benefits afforded with it.

Our coaching programs are in full swing with many new students which we have welcomed with open arms and we are loving the energy that our students bring each day with their hunger to learn and improve their games.

Term 1, 2022 is not far around the corner and we will be offering squad positions and group lesson bookings so that we can start to lock in our schedule for next year. Again, all those who took up the offer this term will have the same prices afforded to them as a way of thank you from MCA Tennis.

This year we are looking at holding a Christmas Tennis Camp running for 3 days staying 2 nights here at the College to train and have fun and get some bonding time with their hopeful teammates for AIC next season. The camp will be open to all who wish to participate but will have to be capped at 20 students. We will have activities all day with pool sessions and some gym work but also leisure time/downtime too. Dates are yet to be finalised.

We will also be offering a holiday clinic in the new year in January in preparation for a big year ahead.

All dates and prices will be released soon for Holiday Camp and also Holiday Clinic.

Thank you from MCA Tennis. Keep up the good hitting.

Mov3 is a fundamental motor skills program based upon the Australian Sports Commission’s Physical Literacy Framework.

Guidance is provided to develop the child’s competency in fundamental movements, such as balance and agility, while also focusing on swimming skills, running technique and bike riding skills.

Delivery of the program is consistent with creating a positive developmental experience that encourages effort, persistence, enjoyment, satisfaction, prolonged engagement with sport and, critically, enhanced self-confidence within and outside of the sporting domain.

The Mov3 program aims to provide the foundational skills required for a range of sports, including Rugby Union, Swimming, Rugby League, Athletes, Basketball, Cricket, Softball, Netball, AFL, Touch Football, any form of Cycling and Triathlon. We hope this provides the opportunity for all in the community to be active.

Here is the link to the website page: Mov3 (triathlon.org.au)

What will you learn?

The team will focus on developing the key fundamental sporting movements highlighted in the Sport Australia Physical Literacy Framework. This will ensure all participants learn basic skills that can be applied to many sports.

Why is Mov3 unique?

Mov3 is reflective of the Sport Australia Physical Literacy Framework. We are committed to delivering a program that promotes a holistic approach to health and wellbeing. Exposing kids to this concept now is the first step to encouraging the lifelong habit of movement and physical activity.
