Year 5/6 Poetry

This term the Year 5/6's began a unit of work on Poetry.  So far the students have learnt that poetry is a type of literature that stirs a reader's imagination or emotions.  The poet does this by carefully choosing and arranging language for its meaning, sound and rhythm.  The students have explored figurative language : simile, metaphor, personification and idioms and poetic devices like alliteration, meter and imagery.

Here are a few poems:

The Sneaky Cat

An animal as light as a feather

An animal as quiet as a mouse

This animal sneaks around like a sneaky fox

They only come out on the blackest nights

The little kitten runs on their four paws as fast as a cheetah

Until the sun as bright as a supernova appears in the sky

Then they retreat back inside

With their owner they will hide

until the very next night.

Bees

Bees, the most important creature,

they are our little sunshine,

everyday, everywhere

there to produce their yellow delight for their hive,

filing into a puzzling pattern of honeycomb.

Clouds

I look up to the sky and I see,

 The clouds running playfully.

They sprint around playing hide ‘n’ seek’,

And jump on the trees just like trampolines.

 Clouds are so bubbly.

 They sing with the birds’

 And do yoga with sun.

Just imagine how it would be,

To dance and sing with the clouds.

The Field

As the butterflies fly across the field,

I can hear the birds singing as the wind whispers in my ears.

I can see the sun smiling across the field,

As I watch the plants swaying in the wonderful wind whispers.

I can see the antelope dancing as I sit,

and watch the birds talking to each other while they fly.

What a beautiful day!

Logan (My Brother)

Logan is a monkey just before bedtime,

Logan is a fart machine around me,

Logan is an angry lion if he doesn't get his way,

Logan is a genius, he knows how to change the channel,

Logan is a loud siren when anyone is in a meeting.

Butterfly

The butterfly is a bubble beautiful though delicate

The butterfly is a jewel shining in the morning sun

The butterfly is a cloud flying peacefully around the flowers

The butterfly is a rainbow bright, joyful colours on their wings

The butterfly is an angel flying high in the sky.

Metaphor Poem

My dog Murray is a sloth that hardly leaves his bed.

Murray is a wrecking ball breaking everything in its path!

His eyes are gems as the glisten in light.

He is a cheetah as he runs around the house.

My dog is a mouse compared to all the other dogs.

Murray is a pig when he eats never knowing when to stop.

Yet he is a cupid the way he loves us all.

Personification

The trees danced in the wind and the sun smiled from above,

The ribbons flew through in the breeze

The water travelled down the hill

This was what I saw when I looked outside.

The smile on my face was gleaming in the sunshine!

Snake

The snake is a long rope, slithering across the ground.

Its tongue is a long, red ribbon, hissing menacingly.

Its eyes are cunning black abysses that their prey gets lost into.

The snake’s fangs are needles, ready to sink its teeth into the body of their victims.

The snake’s scales are blades, sharp and thin.

The snake’s body is a long trail of green, swiftly approaching behind.

SNAP. The menacing, moss green monster engulfs its victims.
