MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS

Shauna Thompson, Assistant Principal Middle School &  8 – 12 Wellbeing

I would like to take this opportunity to outline the end of year arrangements for Year 8 and 9 and 1st and 2nd Year IGNITE students at Aberfoyle Park High School this year.

Panel Presentations will take place for year 8 and 9 and 1st and 2nd Year IGNITE students on Monday 6 December. This is the final activity for the Wellbeing for Learning program for 2021. Parents/caregivers will be invited to be part of these Panel Presentations with bookings to be made through SOB’s. Please look out for information about this in the coming weeks.

Panel Presentations are an important opportunity for students to reflect on their learning and personal growth over the year and for them to share this with important adults who are part of their lives.

Reflection is a very important part of learning and Panel Presentations will support students to identify areas of strength and challenge and allow them to think about short term and long-term goals.

Students have already begun working on this task during Wellbeing for Learning and we encourage parents/caregivers to have a conversation with your child about how they are progressing.

Students will end their formal lessons at 3.15pm on Wednesday 8 December. They will participate in a curriculum-based activities program during Thursday 9 and Friday 10 December. Student Achievement Summaries will be distributed on Wednesday 8 December.

POETRY CAFE

Rebecca Rowe, Year 8 Leader

Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words.” – Robert Frost

In week 10 term 3, 2-3 students from each year 8 Care Group were invited to take part in a Poetry Café including hot chocolates and biscuits! The selected students were those who submitted outstanding poems for their year 8 English Poetry assessment task.

Students shared their poems with peers from their own and other classes. It is not often that we get the opportunity to hear work from other students and classes, so it was wonderful to hear poems from a range of students within the Year 8 cohort.

Students from left to right:

Bailey, Tanishq, Alina, Anahid, Keira, Taiya, Charlotte, Addi and Emma

The best way to hear poetry is out loud, and to achieve the full impact of the words, listening with rhyme and rhythm is a special experience. The poetic techniques, chosen themes and ideas used by the students were incredible to listen with their own voices.

A big thank you to the following staff for helping and attending the year 8 Poetry Café, Ms Thompson, Ms Ingram, Ms Smitran and Ms Dean. It was wonderful to hear these talented students share their poems - they should all be very proud of their writing!
