YEAR 9 IGNITE STUDENTS TRIAL EDIBLE INSECTS

Kathryn Lamb, IGNITE Coordinator

Year 9 IGNITE students, as part of a ‘Biomes and Food Security’ geography unit, recently investigated the environmental impacts of changing diets. This involved considering a range of strategies which could lead to more sustainable food production.  In one lesson, students had the opportunity to trial edible insects and impressed with their willingness to sample a range of cricket and mealworm products.  Students ranked these, with cricket corn chips proving the most popular.

In their reflections they recognised that edible insects are a sustainable source of protein and an important part of our food future.   Students then utilised this experience when designing a digital advertising campaign on the impacts of changing diets for the Australian public.
