JAPANESE CLASS

Mem Evci, Student

On 17 September, the senior (year 10-12) Japanese classes went to Himeji Gardens on South Terrace and Ginza Miyako on North Terrace.

At the gardens, we were met by a tour guide who showed us around the beautiful gardens that were filled with not only greenery it also had its own Zen garden filled with gravel and rocks. This section was inspiring as it let us use our imagination in the garden to believe what we want the Zen garden to try to portray. The rest of the garden was filled with nature and plants from Japan and Australia. We were taught that everything in the garden is there for a reason and that it is important to be appreciative of your surroundings.

Ginza Miyako is a traditional Japanese restaurant with built-in floor tables and cushions. We were given a choice of Bento box to pick before the excursion, and these options included Karaage Chicken, Salmon Sashimi and Katsu Pork. Each student also received a bowl of miso soup and green tea for the authentic Japanese experience. It was an enriching experience, as the whole room was decorated with traditional Japanese paintings which gave us a sense of calmness.

It was not only a visually pleasing experience, but it allowed us to learn about the way of living in Japan. This contrasted nicely with the location as both of these places were in the hustle and bustle of Adelaide city. It was a refreshing, rejuvenating and overall pleasant experience, and I highly recommend attending these places within your own time or on an excursion!
