Hockey - Sharon Buchanan Cup

On Monday our senior girls' hockey team played the final of the Sharon Buchanan Cup at ALAC. With the cancellation of Schools Country Week teams were invited to nominate for a carnival in Perth in August with the top two teams from each pool going through to the final. These teams being Como Secondary College and Great Southern Grammar. This was the third year in a row that both teams had made the final with Como winning both previous games.

The game was played in wet and windy conditions, with a little bit of hail, with about 100 spectators braving the elements. Como came out aggressively in the first quarter with several attacking plays and a few shots on goal. The GSG defence played extremely well thwarting any opportunities and not allowing Como to take clean shots at goal. Just before halftime, Como scored a scrambly goal after a save by the GSG goalie Kira Pearce. After a clash of bodies, Como’s Jaeda Ritchie managed to squeeze the ball through her pads to dribble over the line. 1-0 to Como at half time.

The GSG team had several breakaway opportunities in the third quarter and eventually the tight Como defence made an error allowing Carie Ball to steal the ball from the defender and slot it past the keeper. 1-1

In the final quarter Como’s Saysha Pillay scored an excellent tomahawk rebound goal from a corner to make it 2-1 with eight minutes remaining. Through the good work of Emma Wilson, GSG received a penalty stroke when she was brought down illegally in the circle with just three minutes remaining. Unfortunately GSG could not convert the stroke with the final score being 2-1 to Como in a very even and hard fought game.

Presentations were made and Saysha Pillay, the Como captain, was awarded the Ashleigh Nelson medal as best on ground, as voted by the umpires. Best players for GSG were Tara Cunningham, Kira Pearce, Abby O’Neill and Isabelle Plowman, but there were many more excellent efforts. It was inspiring to see the girls come together, train hard and compete with the simple of joy of being able to play as a group of friends. While the team didn’t win the final game they won so much more by be being outstanding people and valuable role models. It was the last game of school hockey for ten of our Year Twelve girls and we thank them for their outstanding contribution.
