YEAR 7 NEWS…

This week we were fortunate enough to have two guests from the Unleashing Personal Potential (UPP) Program to facilitate a full day session called ‘Step Up’. The program has provided students with some skills on how to step up in certain situations in life and school to meet goals/targets they set for themselves. It continued to provide information on how students can use one another, friends, and family to achieve and reach these goals as resources. One of the main objectives from the day included failure. The program stated that without failure we cannot learn and continue to grow as human beings. It is when we have setbacks that we continue to achieve and set goals so we can continue to grow from our mistakes and failures. An important take away for the students was the word ‘focus’. Meaning, to focus we must Follow One Course Until Successful. I will continue using this acronym in the coming weeks, months, and years in developing the Year 7 students for their futures. I hope that all students have gained some learning experiences this week through a fun and interactive way presented by external providers in the field. Students will continue to work with these external providers to continue developing skills for their futures. Follow up sessions will also take place during Social Emotional Lessons in the coming months.

Last week permission forms were sent out via parent slips for our Year 7 Retreat taking place at Echo Creek Adventure Camp in Tully. This retreat will take place in Week 4, Term 3 from Wednesday 6th August – Friday 8th August. I look forward to this exciting school event with the Year 7 students next term. Permission forms need to be completed at your earliest convenience so that the retreat can be organised well within the timelines required. If you have any concerns regarding your child’s attendance at the retreat and requests that may be required for medical purposes, please contact me (Miss McBryde) as soon as possible. It is compulsory for all students to attend this event and therefore contact from home if your child is unable to attend must happen as soon as possible.

With only three weeks remaining for this term many students will be experiencing an increased amount of assessment which includes exams and assignments. I encourage you to sit with your child and make sure they are aware of the due dates for their assessment. This can be found on the College website on the Year 7 Assessment Planner. It is recommended that students should be completing approximately 1 – 1.5 hours of homework each night. The homework should include revision, work on assignments and homework set from each lesson. If you have questions regarding assessment or homework, I encourage you to get in touch with your child’s classroom teacher.

At this stage, a significant number of students in Year 7 are still not using their diaries as resources for organisation and recording of homework/assessment. Parents are asked to sign the diary from the previous week each weekend to provide support in knowing what homework is being set and complete. When students do not fill out their diaries with homework/revision for each lesson or get their diary signed consequences will be issued. Unfortunately, I have already had to do this for a few students. If this behaviour continues to be repeated than the consequences will escalate.
