Technology and STEM

@ St Louis

Year 5 and 6 returned to the digital world in the form of Minecraft Education to explore different problems around the world and also apply some of their learning from previous weeks.

Year 6 students became Climate Warriors. They were presented with a bushfire emergency scenario and had to move through a range of problems in order to reduce the danger rating from Catastrophic, build fire-resistant buildings, save native wildlife, even pilot the rescue helicopter and drive the fire engine.

Year 5 used the platform to explore biomes and build structures including, houses, factories, and farms. Once they had been creative in designing and building, they then had to think about what renewable energy sources would work within the biome to power their structures. Some students managed to use a range of hydro, solar, and wind power designs to create lots of renewable energy. Prof Wood can't wait to see what they come up with next.

Our Wednesday Techsperts club set a new record this week with 72 students coming along to build and create teams using Minecraft Education, in their lunchtime. Therefore the shoutout goes to all those children who came into the STEM space and worked with their friends to solve problems.

Also, thank you to the year 6 Techsperts who helped to problem solve and guide our younger students. You know who you are!

Lastly, another shoutout goes to our Communication Leaders who ran their first student radio program at Southern FM 88.3. If you wanna check it out, head to our school website and look on the For Families page.
