Year 12 Assembly

Time flies when you are having fun or when you are doing Year 12 as we have passed the half way point for the year.  In Friday's assembly Mr Murphy highlighted that there are really only 12 weeks to go after next week.  The assembly was designed to provide students with some guidance about how to make the most of that time.

Key points from the assembly were:

  • The importance of spaced practice in study (4 x 15 minutes of study is more effective that 1x60 minutes).
  • The effectiveness of practice test taking as a revision strategy.
  • The link between success and self control and grit.
  • Positive Psychology and how to maintain well being when things get tough.
  • Exploring future pathways and preparing for University Open days.

Mr Davison announced that next Friday will be a PJ theme day for the year 12 students.  We ask that students be mindful of the classes they have that day and ensure they have appropriate footwear if they have a practical class.  Students may also not wear thongs.

YEAR 11 VCAL

This term Year 11 VCAL has participated in several excursions including, visiting Car city, podcasting at SYN FM, Homelessness workshop, industry investigation and The Winter Sleepout (done remotely). All of these excursions have linked back to units of work in each class.

In Work Related Skills students have been completing their industry investigation project. For this task students were required to do some research about a specific industry of their choice to learn about that industry and about the skills and education that was required for those specific jobs in their chosen industry. Students attended two workshops one was The Hotel School, and the other was Kangan Institute. At both workshops we learned the skill shortages in that industry from mechanics to hotel staff.

Year 11 VCAL students participated in the Winter Sleepout. The Winter Sleepout is designed for students to experience what it's like to be sleeping rough. It was planned that they were going to sleep out in the ECA but due to lockdown they all set up in their backyards for the night. During the Winter Sleepout there was a guest presenter Russell from Habitat for Humanity who spoke to the students about what he does. Habitat for Humanity work with families to build houses that they can call home. During the winter sleepout students had various check-in times where they had to answer some reflection questions about their experience during the night.

We all would like to thank Miss King, Miss Robertson and Mr Graham for organising the Winter Sleepout.

Year 11 VCAL – ‘Making Change’ for those who experience disadvantage in our community

The Year 11 VCAL students recently slept out over night in a Winter Sleepout to raise awareness of the issue of homelessness in our community. As a follow up, the students have developed a number of ways contribute to some local organisations and will be seeking the assistance of the Wantirna College community. Look out for more information and details from each of the following groups:

  • Donations of essential items for Backpacks for VIC Kids
  • Donations of prizes for a raffle for the salvation Army
  • Food donations for TLC Support
  • A GoFund me link for Habitat for Humanity
  • A blankets and bedding drive for Habitat for Humanity

Year 10

Lockdown came at the worst possible time for our Year 10 students with each of the events students were looking forward to having to be postponed.

The good news is each event (work experience, the winter ball and the city camp) has been re-scheduled for term 3.  The City Stay camp may look slightly different with some activities not being available for re-booking but the team are working hard to ensure the same quality experience.
