Reconciliation Week 2021
This year from 27th of May to the 3rd of June we honoured National Reconciliation Week. The theme for this year was ‘More than a Word’, acknowledging the need to do more than say the word ‘reconciliation’ but that action needs to be taken. National Reconciliation Week is a chance to work towards the goal of building respectful relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and other Australians, and to create a fair and equal society.
One of the major dates in the Reconciliation Week is Mabo Day which occurs each year on 3rd June. This is because on 3rd June 1992, the High Court overturned the legal concept of "terra nullius", that land claimed by white settlers belonged to no-one. The court ruled in favour of the Meriam people by a majority vote of six to one. The Mabo decision acknowledged the traditional rights of Indigenous people to their land and waters and paved the way for native title in Australia. It also recognised that Indigenous people occupied Australia for tens of thousands of years before the British arrived in 1788.
To commemorate Reconciliation Week a speech was given to the whole school over the PA system by one of our indigenous students to acknowledge the history of Australia’s Indigenous community and that the journey to reconciliation is the responsibility of each and every Australian.
We are so proud of the work our indigenous students have done in honouring their culture and educating our school community on important dates such as this week. We look forward to continuing to spread awareness through events on the school calendar throughout the rest of the year.
