15’s Currie Cup AFL

The Currie Cup Under 15 AFL Competition was run after school over the past three weeks at Robertson Oval. The competition had two pools, we were placed in a highly competitive Pool A with Kildare Catholic College and Mater Dei Catholic College. The Boys came up against a strong Kildare side in their first round match, where they were gallant in defeat, losing 62 to 19. In the second round, the boys played Mater Dei in difficult conditions and lost 47 to 10. Due to the result of the pool matches, the boys were given the tough assignment of playing Mater Dei in the semi final. The boys demonstrated excellent perseverance and fought hard throughout the game, but unfortunately, they went down 59-20. The boys never stopped with their effort throughout this game and ended up outscoring Mater Dei in the final quarter. Notable players throughout this competition included Jack Rudd, Tom Wilson, Thomas Kerrisk, Sidney Lenton, Daniel Okerenyang and Nate Hamblin.

With a large number of students being eligible to play in 2022, it will be exciting to see this team develop and become even stronger next year!

Girls 15’s AFL

The Under 15 Girls AFL team took on Kooringal High School in their first game, Monday of Week 2. We were down two players but still were able to match it with Kooringal until the girls ran out of legs in the last quarter. Our second game was played on Wednesday against Wagga Wagga High School. We managed to recruit players for this game and played well as a team. There were some great goals scored and tackles made. Unfortunately we weren’t able to take the win. Our next two games were played against two very strong Kildare and Mater Dei outfits. All players tackled and ran hard but we unfortunately couldn’t come away with any wins. A big thank you for the willingness and commitment of all of the girls involved. It was a very enjoyable three weeks.

Opens Girls AFL - Runners Up

The College Open AFL girls had a successful and enjoyable 2021 campaign. Taking two teams to the qualifying Gala Day at Robertson Oval in Week 4, each team played three games against various other Wagga Wagga High Schools.

Team A was undefeated throughout the day, earning a spot in the grand final against Mater Dei on Wednesday 19 May.

The girls played with great spirit and enthusiasm, and despite a seemingly lopsided score line (40 - 1) made the Mater Dei team earn every possession with some ferocious tackling.

Better players in the final were Tootsie Lamb, Lily Peacock, Bonny McKean, Zara Hamilton and Rio Weideman.

Thanks to Mr Tom Martin for helping during the Gala Day and Mrs Kjaer for all the organisation leading up to the competition.

Open Boys AFL Carroll Cup - Winners and Defending Champions!!

Congratulations to the Open Boys AFL team who successfully defended the Carroll Cup last Wednesday with a hard fought victory over a determined Mater Dei Catholic College. The final score was TRAC 10.6 – 66 defeated Mater Dei 2.3 – 15. After a slow start the team lifted their effort and intensity after quarter time and were able to gain the momentum going into the second half. Onballers Sam McNaughton, Billy Glanvill, Luke Fellows and Gerard Okerenyang were instrumental in turning the tide our way during the 2nd and 3rd quarters.

The backline was solid all game with Jack Glanvill and Jack Llyod leading the way with their ability to win crucial one on one contests. They were assisted by the consistent Joe Perryman, Dave Treharne and Harrison Thomas. Mark Gooden Medallist (BOG) Sam Stening provided a focal point up forward with his strong work rate and three goals, while small forward Tom Howard was at his creative best all night. Jock Heeney competed well at half forward and Tom Holden provided a good avenue to goal with three majors for the night.

Overall it was a fantastic team effort by the boys. The team was able to remain undefeated throughout the series. Unfortunately only 22 boys could play on the night and a big congratulations must go to all squad members for their enthusiasm and effort throughout the competition. The College would like to thank the Year 12 students for their service to AFL over their time at the College. This group of young men have led the College to a number of successful campaigns including victories in the Currie Cup, NSW State titles and the Carroll Cup. These outgoing Year 12 students include: Luke Fellows, Billy Glanvill, Sam Stening, Sam McNaughton, Joe Perryman, Harrison Thomas, David Treharne, George Carn, Ryan Collins, Jack Llyod, Jock Heeney, Judd McCleod, Nick Harris, Josh Hosie, Tully Forbes and Tom Fitzgerald.

A big thankyou to Mr Reynolds (Assistant Coach), Mr Begg (Trainer) and Mr Fuller for their assistance throughout the campaign. The players would also like to thank all of the current students, past students, teachers and family members for their support during the competition.

7/8 Girls Tracey Gunsen Netball - Winners!!

If there is one thing that can be said about this team, it is that they like a challenge. They made it hard for themselves by losing the first two round games against Kildare and Mater Dei. Not only that, but Maddi rolled an ankle and Lucy decided to break her finger in two places; like I said, they really wanted to test themselves.

The first knock-out semi-final saw us come up against Kildare again, who were at that stage, undefeated. We were the underdogs, hungry for a win. It was clear some changes needed to be made if we were to turn the tables on our opposition. Zali switched from defence to shooting and Milla swung into the WA role. For the first time in the competition, the girls really worked together as a team. Tali's accuracy was spot on while Mabel had an absolute cracker of a game, swiping in intercepts all over the court. The team's determination led them to a three-point win and somehow, we had managed to make the grand final.

Mater Dei were worthy adversaries for the final match. For the first half, it was neck and neck and by the break, we were down by two. Grace came onto the court with a job to do; hold well and score goals. She delivered. Zali brought her defensive brain to the GA position, ensuring every rebound and lost ball was snatched in. The backline was relentless in their hassling of the opposition and stepped up their game to limit their goals. By the end of the third, we were up by five. The girls were ecstatic but knew they couldn't be complacent. Maddi and Tali ensured smooth passages of play throughout the centre court and Lucy pulled in intercepts with such vigour it was like she wanted to break more fingers. The team really found their groove and finished a spectacular final with a 13-point win.

A massive congratulations to all the girls and to the MVP of the match, our all-rounder powerhouse Zali Wheatley. To see how far the girls progressed as a team in such a short time was extremely rewarding. Undoubtedly, there is a lot of talent moving up the ranks!

Finally, a big thank you to our brilliant volunteer umpires, Lucy Bennett and Leila Campbell, and to all the parents who helped out with scoring and cheering!

Opens Tracey Gunsen Netball - History Making Winners!!

Congratulations to the Open Girls netball team who made College history, winning their first ever Senior Tracey Gunsen Competition in 2020. With Kildare Catholic College leading for the entire game, the girls played with determination and commitment each quarter. They kept a steady focus and with continued belief in their team, they managed to take the lead with minutes left on the clock. The crowd’s energy helped them to hold the small lead until the final siren sounded, sealing the victory by 2 goals. We were victorious against Kildare 23 goals to 21 in a close and competitive game.

This is the first time in College history that we have won this competition. This victory has been made so much sweeter having friends, family and College spectators able to watch after the girls were disappointed to finish Runners Up last year in front of an empty Equex Stadium due to COVID-19.

Congratulations to Ruby Gillard who was named player of the final. Thank you to Miss Lashbrook and Mrs Last for their dedication coaching and managing the side.
