Education News

Research shows that children who are given exposure to books daily by someone who loves books will develop the desire to learn to read. This intrinsic motivation can do more to help a child learn to read than all the worksheets in the world. So, when you do your best to find time to read aloud every day, you're doing much more than "just" reading to your child.

When you make time for a read-aloud every day, you also make time for:

  • Enjoying the sheer pleasure that books can bring
  • Real-life exposure to the language and literacy skills students have been learning throughout the course of the school day
  • Inspiring beginning readers to plunge onward with their reading efforts
  • Sending the message that reading books is so important, that time is made for it every day without exception.
  • Young children whose parents read them five books a day enter kindergarten having heard about 1.4 million more words than kids who were never read to, a new study found. This 'million word gap' could be one key in explaining differences in vocabulary and reading development.

Premiers Reading Challenge

The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open and CSPS is excited to be participating. The PRC application offers a range of exciting features including:

  • access to a library catalogue (including book images and blurbs)
  • a modern user-friendly interface
  • rewarding  students with badges as challenge milestones are achieved
  • the option for students to mark books as a favorite, give them a star rating or complete a book review

The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by 17 September 2021 from the beginning of the year.

Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents and teachers. Children from Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read 15 books with at least 10 of these on the booklist.

All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and former Premiers.

To read the Premier’s letter to parents, view the booklist and for more information about the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge, visit: www.education.vic.gov.au/prc

Classroom teachers will be able to verify students reading list by use of reading diaries. It is an expectation that all students read at home at least 4 nights per week and have their diaries signed. These diaries should be brought to school for the classroom teachers to sign. S
