An Overview of our Learning

Foundation students returned to school ready to create! They spent some time cementing their knowledge of the elements of art by completing a worksheet for their portfolio. Students demonstrated their understanding of colour and line and reflected on their favourite art project for the semester. This was a great opportunity to talk about just how much they have achieved and developed their skills.

Students finished their paper collage of the three bears, decorating the clothes with small details and fiddly bits to make their work unique.

Upon returning to school, Year One and Year Two students picked up where they left off, returning to the art of the Impressionists and adding trees to their Monet inspired landscape. Students had to think about the colours they use to give their painting some depth so it didn't look flat but also not worry about it looking picture perfect. It's all about the impression of the landscape and the leaves on the trees to capture a moment.

At last it was time for the Year One students to finish their treasure maps after a few interruptions to the timetable. It was a delight to see the creativity and imaginations of the students in full swing as they completed the small details.

Year Two students created penny spinners, practicing neat colouring techniques to design a spinning top. This led to discussions of colour theory and the differences between light colour mixing and paint colour mixing.

Take a family visit to the NGV

From the 4th June to the 3rd September, the National Gallery of Victoria will exhibit works of the French Impressionists including works by Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, Camille Pissarro, Mary Cassatt and more. This is a wonderful opportunity to see these works in person.

Year Three/Four students listened to the story 'Mad Magpie' by Gregg Dreise and excelled at drawing a magpie with oil pastels. Using their backgrounds made from homemade paint brushes, students learned how to use simple shapes to help them draw a magpie using a reference photo and concentrated on making bold solid marks to make their bird stand out.

Year Three/Four finished off the term with some paper folding in the form of a flextangle. Students decorated the 2D design and folded the paper to form a tube, connecting it to create a 3D fidget toy.

While it was particularly fiddly to master the folds everyone had lots of fun designing a pattern and playing with the finished product.

Year Five/Six students have continued to work on their David Hockney inspired landscape, mixing colours and painting carefully within a space. When the first layer was complete, students painted over each space with a contrasting colour and scratched patterns into the wet paint to reveal the original underneath.

While this project is still a work in progress, practising with mark making and line work is rendering some fantastic results.
