What have SSPS Students been up to ?

The Year 5 & 6 students were challenged with the task of drawing their bedroom from a bird’s eye view. They then had to make a 3D model of their bedroom remembering to use scale.

Green Team

We are so happy the Wonder bread bag and tag recycling bins have now arrived. Green Team have started filling them up with your collections. Please continue to save all your bread bags and tags during lock down and bring them to school when we return. Remember it can be from ANY brand and includes bags for wraps and rolls – if it’s a bag that had bread in it, you can recycle it!

Maths in Foundation

Foundation students, including those onsite, were learning about capacity and finding out how many spoonfuls it takes to fill a cup.

Education Week

This year’s theme for Education week was ‘Building Connections’. The theme allowed classes to celebrate the connections within our school. Each class had a 'buddy grade' for the week and enthusiastically engaged in many activities! 2H and 4B were buddy grades, here is what we got up to . . .

Information Texts

We started the week by exploring many nonfiction texts in the library to gather research on a topic of interest. 2H have been learning about Information Texts and were the experts in explaining what they needed to find (next time you see one of the friendly 2H members - ask them to sing you their Information Text song!).  Later in the week, 4B lent a helping hand to 2H and showed them how to research extra information online. Each group used their research to create an Information Text on Pic Collage.

Sorry Day

Each year the 26th of May is National Sorry Day. 2H and 4B read the picture book 'Sorry Day' By Coral Vass. They learnt about the Apology speech from Kevin Rudd in 2008, and why it is very important to come together as a nation to share the steps towards healing for the Stolen Generation. Each member of 2H and 4B created a hand that symbolises reconciliation and a Purple Hibiscus flower. The five-petal Native Hibiscus is the official national symbol of the Stolen Generations, and the colours symbolise compassion and healing.

Year 3P students and their buddy class 4P celebrated 'National Sorry Day' on 26th may.  Both classes were exposed to the importance of this day and completed a creative task to display in the main building.

Inquiry for Year 5 and 6 Students

The Year 5 and 6 children were looking at events that happened in our past that made Australia what it is today. They created dioramas that showcased the event visually and factually. The children then shared their knowledge and dioramas with the Year 1/2 children.

From the Library

Issue 4 catalogues for LOOP Bookclub are now available here. All students have been given a hardcopy catalogue to take home and with the upcoming school holidays now is the perfect time and a great opportunity to buy some new books to read and support the school library in the process - thank you! ONLINE orders are due by: 4pm on Friday 11th June, 2021

Wednesdays have been a popular day for literary events recently with the National Simultaneous Storytime held on 19th May and National Sorry Day on 26th May followed promptly by Reconciliation Week (27th May - 3rd June). To celebrate these events the library has displayed a range of Space and Indigenous books for student and staff browsing, reading and borrowing.

Reminder: Weekly notices are sent home with students to alert families of outstanding library books. Students can renew or return overdue books to the library at any time during the week. Please contact the school, library or your student's class teacher regarding any missing, lost or damaged books - thank you!

Happy reading!
