STEM NEWS

Hello STEMgineers!

Here is the latest STEM news update from your STEM leader Felix.

We have had an amazing number of students enter the first ever SMPPS Film Festival. Entries have now closed and we are looking forward to seeing and reviewing all the entries. If you have missed out this year, there is always a chance to join in on the fun in 2021!!

There are 3 prizes to be won -

  1. The Student’s Top Pick Prize
  2. The Teacher’s Top Pick Prize
  3. ACMI’s Finest Prize

We have been fortunate to have ACMI in the city be a judge in our Film Festival. They are excited by our idea.

As the STEM leader I loved all the entries. SMPPS STEMgineers are so creative telling stories with technology.

What is happening in STEM at SMPPS?

The STEM topic for the Grade Prep to Grade Four at the moment is 3D map building that can be utilised by our Beebots. So far everyone has been having great fun building any map they want including volcanoes, treasure maps and even underwater maps.

Planning Stage of the Engineering Design Process- Map Planning: Landmarks to be placed onto the map.

5/6 Animation for the cyber safety video.

The Grade 5/6 are using their film making skills to produce cyber safety videos. So watch out for them!

MASCOT COMPETITION - ZERO HERO

At South Melbourne Park Primary School we inspire the next generation of curious minds to be a step ahead in environmental awareness. In 2019 and this year our school policy for food waste was “Nude Food”.

Next year we are changing our program to Zero Hero. A Zero Hero would be a student, teacher, staff or community member who brings their food to school in reusable containers and takes home all food waste they bring to school that isn’t compostable.

Our aim is to have no rubbish in the bins at school next year!

We are encouraging all students of any age at SMPP to have a go at designing a mascot for the SMPPS Zero Hero. The mascot should be a 2D drawing (you can use pencils, textas, crayons, pens or paint!).

The selected mascot would appear on certificates, posters and maybe even class trophies!

All entries can be submitted to Miss Pantano (tiffany.pantano@education.vic.gov.au) or submitted to classroom teachers by the 3rd of December.
