Debating

Congratulations go out to our junior debating teams from September where the topic was: "That we regret the use of participation awards." Our year 7 team was the negative team, and year 8s were affirmative. The results were as follows: Year 7 team (Leo E, Henry C, and Lam R) - lost to the affirmative team from OLMC (Our Lady of Mercy College) Year 8 team (Matilda D, Deana G, and Angus T) - lost against the negative team from OLMC (Our Lady of Mercy College). While neither team wasn't successful, both teams put in a fantastic performance and got some excellent feedback from the adjudicators. We can be proud of all of our students for representing Coburg High School so well. Great work writing and then giving your speeches, and a special commendation to those who participated in debating for the first time. Debating remotely added an extra level of complexity for everyone who participated, which makes this achievement that little bit more impressive. And thank you, too, to those parents and carers who took the opportunity to come along and digitally spectate. It was great to have you there, supporting the teams!

Congratulations, everyone! Round 3 commenced on the 22nd of October, and it is going to be another great topic.

Youth Parliament

Earlier this year, our team was a part of a program called ‘Youth Parliament’. Run by YMCA, the intention of the program was to help young people be heard by parliament. We, Coburg High School, were fortunate enough to have been given the opportunity to participate in this program where we were able to draft and table our own bill to debate. Our team advocated for Free Public Transport for students. We found this relevant to ourselves and our peers at school where we wanted students to be able to properly access their education despite not having a myki or having a lower socioeconomic status. The challenges we faced in creating our bill remotely was that all interactions with one another were online and we were unable to attend our initial training camp and that we could not present our bill in the Parliamentary chambers. However, we overcame these challenges through the support of Chloe and our Liaison teachers who guided us through the creation of making our bill. We have taken away from our experience at Youth Parliament 2020 that our voices are being heard on a wide range of issues by people who are willing to listen at the highest levels of parliament.
