The Arts

At Hackham East Primary School

Welcome to Another Exciting Term Within The Arts

I wanted to start by congratulating all of our students who participated in and submitted a poster design towards the ‘2021 School Poster Competition’, held by the Adelaide Fringe at the end of Term 3. This was a statewide competition where students from Reception to Year 12 were tasked with designing an image that reflected their own views and ideas about what the Fringe means to them. The winning artwork will appear on the cover of the 2021 Adelaide Fringe Schools Booking Guide. I am excited to say that three of our students made it into the Top 100 finalists for the competition, a huge achievement in itself and an incredible showcase of the artistic talent that our students have at Hackham East Primary School. Currently, the Top 100 entries are on display at an exhibition being held at the Adelaide Central Market until the 22/11. I encourage anyone in the area to head into the Markets and check out all the artwork on display.

Currently within Term 4, our Junior Primary classes have been refining their skills through experimenting with a variety of different Media Arts applications. These applications have allowed us to develop a different perspective of the Arts and how technology can be used to enhance the way we view, respond to and create Art. Students have been using different apps with the iPads such as ‘Flipaclip’ – a program that allows students to create frame by frame animations, photo manipulation software and collaborating with peers to create structured stories as movies through the app ‘Toontastic’. Students have been able to use this software to record and narrate their ideas, add sound effects and musical scores to influence or strengthen the emotion or mood of their ideas.

Middle Primary

The Year 3/4 students have been working towards completing their digital storybooks, based on simple story or idea that they have written within small groups. We have been following a process that will enable a created written narrative to be developed into a moving image story that can be viewed by their peers. This will be achieved by allowing students to explore narrative structure, developing storyboards and illustrations that visually convey the content of their stories, before using movie-editing software to compile these images together with the addition of sound effects, voice and music.

The Upper Primary students have been taking this task a step further, by working collaboratively to create a digital storybook that conveys a meaning/idea that is suitable and appropriate for a younger target audience. Considering the target audience you are trying to communicate with within the Arts is imperative, as it changes how the Art Media is interpreted and responded to. By focusing on a younger audience, students have had to think about the language, sound, visual imagery and story content, to insure that their message is being represented effectively when viewed by children within this age range. Incorporating ideas that consider real world context provides more purpose to the Artwork that the students are creating.

School Map & End of Year Concert

Students have also been designing a ‘School Map’ to be featured on the soon to be created new Hackham East Primary School website. This is being held as a small competition, where students are creating their own map of the school grounds. The selected map will be used as a way to show a Virtual Tour of the school. Preparation has also begun for both the End of Year Concert and Hackham Has Talent. All year levels have been contributing towards designing and creating their own decorations to be displayed at both of these annual school events! We have also been learning and practicing a whole school Christmas song to close out the End of Year Concert, as well as a newly created ‘School Chant’, that incorporates ideas and values synonymous with our Hackham East Primary School village and community.
