Term 4

This Term our Holly and Stillwell students have learnt Softball as our focus on striking games. Students have learnt sideways strike for batting along with selecting the best place to hit the ball to help the batter before moving to the next base. The skills practised have also included throwing, catching with a glove and underarm pitching.

Through our Sporting Schools grant, students in the middle and senior years will have a lesson each week with specialist coaches from the Adelaide Bite until the end of the year.

Our focus on student leadership in Castle continues to bloom with almost every student volunteering to run a part of each lesson. In conjunction with the middle and senior years, students will be learning the fundamental movement skill of sideways striking a ball.

NAIDOC Week

Last week as part of NAIDOC week students learnt the indigenous games Koabangan and Wana. Koabangan was a form of hide and seek that originated in Northern Queensland. Children took turns to hide select objects in nature whilst others then had to find them. In our version, students took turns to hide their teams paper clip throughout the gym with a time limit of 1 minute to find them. Wana was played by the young Noongar girls in the southwest of Western Australia. It is similar to cricket in protecting the stumps with a bat. A child would defend a short stick placed in the ground using a digging stick (Wana) to protect it from other players throwing objects. Our students enjoyed both games with the challenge of hiding and finding a paper clip in Koabangan a favourite of many.

Results

The decision was made this year that an overall winner and shields would not be presented to the Winners and Runners up in each division. This was a shame for us as we had a very strong showing this year with 4 students finishing top in their event with two of those students missing out on 1st place in high jump due to a count back of how many times they touched the bar.

Results for the day include:

Heats: Ella (100m, 1st Place), Charlotte (100m, 3rd Place) and Declan (100m, 3rd Place).

Finals: Skye (Discus, 3rd Place), Ella (100m, 1st Place and High Jump, 2nd Place), Riley D (Shotput, 1st Place and Discus, 3rd Place), Ashley (High Jump, 2nd Place), Cooper K (High Jump, 2nd Place) and Charlotte (800m, 3rd Place).
