Year 4

We are back in the habit of classroom learning and want to congratulate the children for their adaptability and smooth transition back into the classroom. We are still alive with chatter and socialising, something that was clearly missed during remote learning, but it all links well to our new Unit of Inquiry, “People Communicate by Expressing Themselves in Many Different Ways”!

The children are working collaboratively to design an advertisement to convince some of our teachers here at school to like something they don’t! We put a call out to all the staff asking for things they really dislike. What a list we have! Using the children’s new knowledge of how to persuade an audience and the elements advertisers use to persuade buyers such as emotion, humour, colour, special offers etc. in groups, students are set to persuade a teacher to like something they don’t! Will they convince Mrs Simpson to like bananas, Mrs Lawrence to like the dentist, Mrs Ball to like motorbikes or Mr DB to like Christmas Carols? Stay tuned to find out!

During Literacy sessions we are continuing with persuasive writing and also beginning our assessment with picture prompts for narrative and recount writing. We are learning about the language of opinion and fact which also ties in well with our unit of inquiry. We continue to be SMART Spellers with our weekly words. Book Week provided us with some great literature to appreciate and children in year 4 especially love “The Little Wave” a nice, easy read chapter book in verse about characters of a similar age to themselves: https://video.link/w/mFBob

In Maths we are busy working with fractions and shapes. We are looking at the features of 3D shapes such as prisms and pyramids while working with mixed numbers and equivalent fractions and counting on number lines with fractions.

The children have been lucky enough to do some STEM work with Mrs Graham working with Lego down in the Science Room. It is always a much looked forward to session where children can be creative and bring some of their technology ideas and expertise to life!

Also the highlight of Term 4 in year 4 are the pen licences! Children are working hard to make sure they have the right pencil grip, posture and well-formed letters. Some children have been awarded their pen licences and are now proudly working with pens. Keep up the great effort everyone!

This year, grade fours have been invited by local council to participate in an early Christmas competition. Some children have elected to participate in designing a Christmas Card competition. The winning designs are printed on 60 000 cards distributed throughout our GOLDSTEIN community. Entries need to be to Ms Grant by this Thursday afternoon for those who are interested. Good luck to those who enter!
