Year 2

Year 2 Book Week 2020

Curious Creatures and Wild Minds

There was a buzz of excitement around BNPS last week as the students participated in a variety of Book Week activities. The students began the week creating their own curious creatures and identifying what they were wild about and what they were curious to learn about.

The teachers read one of the shortlisted books titled Tilly with the students. The story takes place in the family home where Tilly hides her most precious possessions underneath the step that lead into her room. One day she comes home to find that her parents have had new carpet laid in the house and it has covered the step, trapping her favourite things for ever. Tilly is very sad, but eventually finds a new hiding place for her treasures in a birdhouse hanging in the tree. The Year 2 students were given a picture of a birdhouse and they drew their favourite things in them and shared this with the class. It was interesting to see what the students treasured most, from teddy bears, to jewellery, to photographs, books and toys.

The second shortlisted book we read was called Nop. Nop tells the story of a scruffy bear that lives in Oddmint's Dumporeum. He is plain bear and nobody ever choses him to take home. He finds a red bow on the ground that he ties around his neck and makes his own hot air balloon out of scrap materials he find in the shop. He sets off on an adventure in to the sky to find a friend. He eventually finds a butterscotch orange orang-utan as his friend. This story highlights Nop’s determination and resilience. The Year 2 students enjoyed creating their very own hot air balloons with a photo of them hanging underneath complete with a red bow around their necks. They all set off on an adventure to find a friend too.

Wednesday our students enjoyed dressing up for book week as curious creatures or their favourite book character. There were many and varied costumes, from Matilda to Thing 1 and Thing 2 to witches and unicorns. The Year 2 teachers dressed up as several of the characters from Alice in Wonderland. What a fabulous week the Year 2s had being immersed in beautifully written literature and engaging activities.
