Focus on Learning

Y5/6 - Sharnie Meade

Year 5/6 has had an amazing start to Term 4! We are looking forward to a lot of learning this term, as well as some fun...especially for our graduating Year 6 class!

Mathematics Focus:

This week in Mathematics, we are learning about multiplication and division.  We are learning to solve multiplication problems with increasingly large numbers, using appropriate strategies.  Below you will see a photo of our Learning Intentions and Success Criteria.  These guide the students in their learning, and allow them to gauge where they are up to, and the all important question...'where to next?'

Below is a photo of our class 'Maths Wall' where students can find examples, vocabulary and other hints and tips to help them with their learning each week in Mathematics. Students in Year 5/6 are encouraged to actively participate in their learning and be responsible for their actions surrounding this.  It is imperative that students have a firm knowledge of their multiplication tables, up to 12 x 12.

Here is a quick 'cheat sheet' to the many different strategies for multiplication.  Students are encouraged to try each one, to find the strategy that works best for them in a situation. If you need any additional assistance with mathematical techniques, please reach out to us!

Writing Focus:

This week in English we are re-visiting sentence structure; simple, compound and complex sentences.  We are also focusing on including vivid descriptions in our writing, using adverbs, adjectives and descriptive phrases. Click on this LINK to take you to some examples of student work.

Positivity Focus:

In 5/6 we have been viewing a variety of clips and videos at the beginning of each day, with a focus on changing our attitudes and behaviour to reflect a growth mindset and positivity in each day.  Here is Tuesday's clip... What can you decide to do today to make the world a more positive place?  What are you thankful for today?
