Principal

The past week saw a number of wonderful events to celebrate with many of our students within the college.

I had the pleasure of attending the EAL luncheon that is run annually and involves all of our EAL students bringing in foods from their various cultures to share with each other and staff. It’s an opportunity for all of our EAL students to share their stories as well as an opportunity for our Year 12 EAL students to express their appreciation of the support they have received over their time at the college. I big thank you to the EAL team for arranging this event.

We also had ART week running all of last week with many events occurring throughout the week including badge making, the screening of our recent school production – Moana Jnr, a school photo booth and a huge parade to celebrate the Year 12 students on Friday.

The highlight for me was the student Voice competition in the Drama Centre that saw around 10 students sing to their peers. The support provided by the crowd as immense with everyone involved feeling uplifted at the conclusion of the event. A huge thank you to the Arts team for arranging the events for this week.

And finally, a big thank you to the Year 12 students who finished this week. They have finished their scheduled classes for 2022 and will now prepare at home for their exams which commence with the English / EAL exam on Wednesday the 26th of October. I thank them for their efforts throughout their time here at the college and look forward to catching up at their graduation evening on the 15th of December. Their celebrations on Friday were mostly undertaken in good spirit and I hope you enjoy the photos contained in this newsletter.

Cup Day Holiday

I would like to remind all families that I have sent a letter home in relation to Monday the 31st of October, Cup Day Eve.

Historically, the day before Cup Day holiday has had very poor student attendance.  As a consequence, and as a way of causing least disruption to the educational program of the school, this year we will be using the day as time-in-lieu for teachers.  As expressed in the Victorian Government Schools Agreement 2022, and supported by the DET, this compensates teachers for the time they allocate beyond school hours throughout the year to provide parents with information related to student progress and transitions.

The school will be open on Monday 31st October as Year 12 exams are on during this time, however a number of teachers will be accessing their time in lieu.

The letter sent home is to determine how many students would be attending school on this day so plans can be made as a result of the decreased attendance.  The school will be open on this day and based on previous experience, due to poor student attendance, an alternative program will be in place. This modified program will be created on the morning of the Monday, based on student attendance. Your information will be valuable in ascertaining staffing requirements for this day.

I ask you to confirm with us if your child will be attending on Monday 31st October, 2022 by contacting the school either by completing the section contained in the letter and returning it to the school, by telephone on 9463 7300 or by email through to lalor.sc@education.vic.gov.au by Friday 21st of October.

If you have any questions about any of the above information, please contact me via the general office on 9463 7300.

Best regards,
