Maths Competitions 2018

There are a number of Mathematics competitions that the students can become involved in throughout the year. The purpose of this notice is to ascertain levels of interest. For any further details and registering of interest, please contact Ian Pegram via email at Ian.Pegram@nossalhs.vic.edu.au or via the school phone 8762 4600.

1. Choose Maths Awards

Maths, camera action! Students work in small teams of 3 or 4 to create a 3-5 minute video about Maths. The theme this year is "Our World Needs Maths" This would suit members of the AV team looking for a project to satisfy their creative energy and would also be suitable for students who love Maths and want to express this in some creative way. Details: www.choosemathsawards.org.au

2. Australian Maths Competition (AMC)

This is the main Maths competition, and later in the year I will be seeking participants. Students who are in Year 9 can relax. The good news is that all Year 9 students are automatically entered in the AMC. Later in the year we will be calling for participants from other levels. Details: www.amt.edu.au

3.  The Mathematics Challenge For Young Australians (MYCA)

This is designed for Year 9 and 10 students who are keen on Maths and are looking to extend themselves. Generally students are invited to enrol in this competition but if students can also nominate themselves if interested. Also run by AMT, www.amt.edu.au

4. Choose Maths teacher awards

This is an award for teachers. Teachers are nominated for this award by students. Do you want to nominate an excellent Maths teacher at Nossal? If so contact Mr Pegram for more details. If the teacher wins the award, they could win up to $10,000 and the school would get the same amount too. Hmm that would be nice! www.choosemathsawards.org.au

5. ICAS

If we have enough interest I can organise for our students to be entered in this competition. In the past there have not been enough students interested to warrant entry but I am always open to new competitions. Details: https://www.eaa.unsw.edu.au/icas/subjects/mathematics
