NUMERACY UPDATE
2018 YEARLY FOCUS
At the end of 2018, staff gathered and analysed data relating to the student growth in Mathematics. It was extremely pleasing to note that EVERY student showed growth from 2017 to 2018. Average targets had been set for each Year Level with all of our expectations being higher than the average norms for PAT-Maths and Westwood Basic Number Facts Test as deemed by Westwood and our software program Student Performance Analyser (SPA).
Further analysis if this data, together with, NAPLAN results have given us a clear focus for learning and teaching in Mathematics in 2018:
Further development of the strategies required to solve worded problems. There will be a strong emphasis on open-ended tasks and students being given the opportunity to explain their reasoning.
AROUND THE CLASSES
The first topics for the year have been completed and classes are now engaged in further learning in:
Foundation:
Counting and a focus on the structure of Number 5
& Location (with a vital focus on the language used to describe location)
Year 1:
2-D shapes and 3-D objects
Year 2:
2-D shapes and 3-D objects
& Transformations
Year 3:
Place Value & Time
Year 4:
Multiplication and DivisIon
Year 5:
Addition and Subtraction
Year 6:
Multiplication and Division
NUMBER INTERVENTION
Number Intervention has commenced with eight Year 3 & 4 students. They are already showing more confidence. They are being further assisted with forwards and backwards counting of larger numbers by ones, tens and hundreds. After they have embedded the partitions of numbers 6 – 9, they will be using Empty Number Lines to solve addition and subtraction algorithms using mental strategies.
MATHLETICS
It has been great to hear about the encouragement that many parents are giving their children to participate in Mathletics. Our certificate count reflects a pleasing commitment to improvement. Well done!!!!
Congratulations to:
Four more students have achieved a Gold Certificate:
Congratulations to : James H. (2), Olivia V. (3), Xavier C. (6C) and Kezia F. (6C)
