Global Young Leaders Conference
Individuals invariably have two choices when faced with situations that place them immediately outside their comfort zone - sink or swim. Cowra High School students Maddison Johnson and Alan Read were never going to drown amongst the daunting sea of cultural diversity at the Global Young Leaders Conference held in Washington DC and New York during the last holiday break and were determined to make the most of their opportunity.
The two-week leadership journey, together with 200 students from approximately 80 countries, met all expectations as participants carefully negotiated priorities for their adopted homeland in United Nations simulated forums. “Among other things it gave us a greater insight into what it means to be global citizens and a better understanding of the difficulties of international diplomacy,” Alan said. “It certainly strengthens your communication skills when you have to debate current issues of worldwide importance, such as the environment or health, and try to bring your peers to a consensus while focusing on the benefits and pitfalls to your country.”
The 16-hour days incorporated Global Summit preparation, quality speakers, university tours and security council analysis while conference delegates also experienced significant landmarks, War Memorials, renowned museums and tourist hotspots. “The Lincoln Memorial, Time Square and the Empire State Building were all amazing and The Holocaust museum, was particularly confronting and emotional,” Maddison said. “The highlight for me, though, was the interaction with so many incredible people from diverse backgrounds. You were never the smartest person in the room - there was so much knowledge to gain from the contributors and participants with their varied perspectives on topics and life in general.”
The Year 12 duo, who form part of the school senior leadership group and Cowra’s Youth Council, will now knuckle down for their final weeks before the HSC exams and prepare for life after school. “Being involved in the program has made us re-evaluate what we want to do in the future,” Maddison said. “The trip made us more motivated to make a difference and it also gave us a broad network of friends and future leaders from across the globe. We’re using Skype and Messenger to stay in contact and booking our next overseas trips as we speak.”
Maddison and Alan are truly grateful to the following Cowra businesses for their generous donations that assisted to cover some of the GYLC program expenses: Cowra High School’s staff & student body, Carruther’s Machinery, Cowra Bowling & Recreation Club, Cowra Youth Council, Mr Embroidery, Bushman’s Boots & All and Cowra Breakout.
