Stage 6 Geography - Year 11 Studies of Cultural Integration

As part of their final Preliminary Course studies in Human Geography, Year 11 have been researching “Cultural Integration.” The theory behind Cultural Integration is that all countries of the world are linked through the process of Globalisation and that aspects of different cultures are spread or ‘diffused’ across the globe and ultimately either ‘adopted’ and/or ‘adapted’ to become a part of other cultures.

In-depth studies into this phenomenon and spirited debate in class surrounding cultural identifiers such as sport, music, fashion, food, media and religion were put on hold on Thursday 18 August when the class travelled to Orange for fieldwork.

Whilst in Orange the class participated in the World’s second most popular sport (as measured by registered players) – Ten Pin Bowling. Competition was fierce (as can be seen by the facial expressions in the photos). The ancient Egyptian origins of the sport were barely evident amongst the flashing LED lights and popular music soundtrack, and the venue was most accommodating – a far cry from the first ever bowling alley established in Ballarat (pictured here).

Students dined on culinary delights of their choice for lunch; their eclectic tastes clearly showed that the modern Australian teen is partial to a wide array of palate pleasers, the least of which is dominated by popular American ‘fast-foods.’

This fantastic day of hands-on activity will now be followed by class-based written assignments designed to show exactly how much each student took from their primary research.

I would like to thank the students involved for their respectful & responsible behaviour. They exhibited the core values of Cowra High throughout their time off-site and I look forward to our next fieldwork experience.
