Perisher Ski Trip
Ski Trip Report
Last Wednesday 10 August, seven Cowra High students waited patiently for Canobolas High students to arrive and begin their highly anticipated Perisher ski trip for 2016.
On Thursday morning we woke to a fantastic day – a cloudless sky, perfect visibility and a light wind. It couldn't have been a better day to experience snow sports for the first time. The girls strapped on their skis and had a two-hour lesson getting used to the long planks attached to their boots. They listened and learnt fast, experienced the beginner area on the Magic Carpet lift at Blue Cow and were soon ready to ride the chair lift and hit the first real downhill run. Watching them career down the hill was nail biting, as they crashed out, then shrieked with delight as they turned successfully. Slowly but surely, the Cowra team picked up the basics of controlling speed and snow plough turns displaying so much joy and a sense of accomplishment in their efforts.
The team hit the sack early after an exhausting day but were ready for more snow fun on Friday. It was great to take the team on a tour of the easier sections of Blue Cow and watch them display excellent beginner skills so quickly. Crashes and difficult drop offs didn't stop them and they were able to ski all the way back at the end of a fantastic day. It's my first time to see a beginner group learn so quickly and be able to ride and ski three lifts and cover over 3km of trails.
Overall, it was a brilliant excursion. The students learnt lots of new skills, displayed excellent resilience in a difficult sport and behaved impeccably through the trip. Well done Cowra High, you did us proud again.
A special thanks to Megan Robinson for the work and effort she put in behind the scenes to plan, book and organise the trip. Without her efforts, it wouldn’t have been possible. Well done and thanks from all of us.
