MSC Science News

This term in science, our students have been getting involved with the science of the future and the science of the past!

Students have been constructing robots that interact with the world without direct control by their makers – Robots which can move independently, avoid obstacles and follow programmed pathways. This is part of the future, and Melton’s students are part of this exciting development. Students have started with MindStorms© Lego, but this is only the first step!

Looking into the machines of the future like robots is one part of science, but science is part of history too. The original engineers were craftsmen who could build ingenious (this is where the word engineer comes from!) machinery, such as catapults and trebuchets. The most famous historical engineer is probably Leonardo Da Vinci, and some of our students are following in his footsteps. Mr Andrew Green, says that some of our students are “Developing their understanding of mechanical systems by designing and constructing their own catapults”.

ACE Science

Melton’s ACE students have participated in FULL STEAM AHEAD an online conference hosted by the Museum of Applied Arts & Science. Students had an opportunity to speak with a Particle Physicist, a Computer Scientist and a Game Designer.  Sam in 7A said:

“It was interesting listening to them talk about their jobs, especially the particle physicist. He studies all the physics about the different particles that build our world. Is was great to learn new things about Science and see the new technology.”

The ACE science program is growing fast, and challenging our apprentice scientists.

Ms. Laura Bramble says: “7A, 8A and 9A have been focusing on refining their Scientific inquiry skills over the past 2 terms. They been both designing and evaluating a variety of experiments within their science classes. They have been tackling a range of complex scientific concepts, while building their capacity to communicate these concepts scientifically.”
