Niina Marni,

Two years ago, we re-named our sports day houses with Kaurna names that represent words of movement, reflecting the actions the students do on sports day. This is part of our Reconciliation Action Plan under the action: Visibly Demonstrate Respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultures and contributions in the school environment. We did this to introduce Australians to the Kaurna language, and to encourage everyone to learn about and celebrate this language. Through engaging with the Kaurna language, students develop a shared appreciation of, and pride in the Kaurna language.

House Names, Kaurna meaning and Colours:

Mukanthi             Play        Red

Padminthi           Jump       Yellow

Wirrkuta              Quick      Blue

Yakanthi               Run         Green

How to pronounce the words:

Mukanthi            Moo-kun-di

Padminthi           Pud-min-di

Wirrkuta              Where-ku-ta

Yakanthi               Ya-kun-di

GO TEAMS!!!
