Pastoral Care

Insights from the headspace National Youth Mental Health Survey released recently show more than one in two young people (54%) feel a sense of loneliness.

Since the last survey, conducted in 2018, there has been a growing increase in the proportion of young people who feel they lack companionship and feel isolated.

Today is RU OK? Day and in House time in the morning Years 7-10 girls did activities to practice their skills on how to check in with their friends with caring conversations.  It is not something that comes naturally for everyone. It may feel like we are intruding on someone’s privacy or getting involved in something that is none of our business.  Or we simply don’t know how to start what seems like an awkward conversation.

We know that when young people feel isolated this can impact on their mental health and lead to further social withdrawal. As part of being a school with a big heart, we want to develop young people who not only have a genuine desire to care for others but also have the confidence and skills to reach out and ask RU OK? We hope that bringing awareness to this day inspires and encourages our students to continue asking R U OK?
