Book Week
Celebrations
Old Worlds, News Worlds, Other Worlds
This year's book week theme had us exploring the different worlds that books can take us to. Our Lockdown World has us seeing things in a different light with some of us escaping into the worlds the author shares with us through their writing. As you will read in Mr Gill-Atkinson's article below, author Robert Newton takes us to the Old World of Melbourne in his book, 'Runner' that our Year 7 students are studying.
Some of our staff and students allowed us into their worlds by sharing their favourite books, characters, bookshelves and even family photos. Thank you to all who contributed to our virtual book parade and offered an insight into their book worlds.
We also had many competitions running. Congratulations to the following winners:
Joel Toleafoa Martin Gjorgjijoski Theodore Williams
'Where in the world' Kahoot winner - Joel Toleafoa of 8C
'Minecraft challenge' winner - Martin Gjorgjijoski of 12C for his Harry Potter Hogwarts 'The Great Hall' world - https://youtu.be/THBA491zB6A (more entries below)
Costume winner - Theodore Williams of 8F who took us to Shakespeare's world of Romeo & Juliet
Winners will be contacted via Xuno by Mrs Mesquita next week to arrange for the $50 Campion voucher to be awarded.
Thank you to all who participated. We hope that you were able to escape for a bit into a different world that brought you some enjoyment.

Author Robert Newton
On Wednesday, 25th August, most of Year 7 students tuned in to a Webex discussion panel with Robert Newton, author of Runner, the novel Year 7 are currently studying for English. Robert spoke about his family and his interest in post-pandemic Melbourne in 1919 – remember: the Spanish Flu arrived long before COVID-19. He talked about life in Richmond 100 years ago and the reasons he had for writing his novel, Runner. He also gave some tips for writing your own stories.
Robert’s story writing technique is to draw a picture of a character he wants to write about, stick it on a wall, then ask it questions. Questions about their family, their hopes and dreams, their fears. Then the story writes itself from there. Maybe he’s talking to himself but then again, he has published six novels!
Don’t forget: if you are doing some creative writing, for the Principal’s Writing Challenge, for example, you can get tips from other published authors. Here’s a link to another Australian author speaking at Book Week last week.
