Week 8&9

Virtual Camp

This week Grade 5 students went on Virtual Camp to Canberra. Students have loved being able to listen and learn about Canberra through interactive incursions. This has been an exciting addition to our Home Learning program. Our Literacy, Numeracy and Inquiry lessons this week have been used to further explore Australia’s History. Students' feedback on some experiences are listed here.

Writing

In writing during week 8, students worked on a range of different writing types. Each day their task related to their Virtual Camp experience. They wrote; recipes for a great camp, scripts for a short film, recounts from the War Memorial, a set of rules and a narrative. Next week during week 9, students will continue working on writing Biographies. They will choose someone who has stood up to create change, then research and write a biography about them.  

Reading

This week during our virtual incursions to Canberra, students have enjoyed exploring The National Museum, looking at the history of Music, exploring a Memorial Box and looking into the Australian Constitution. Next week, students will be exploring techniques to analyse and critique a text. 

Maths

This week in maths students learnt about mapping and coordinates. Throughout the week students learnt about the six essential elements found on maps (BOLTSS) and how to use a grid-reference system to locate information. Throughout the week they developed these skills using maps from attractions around Canberra. Next week we will begin our unit on Time. 

Inquiry

This week, students have been delving into some key events in Australia's History as part of our Virtual Camp to Canberra. Students have learnt about colonisation and  its impact on our first nations people, Federation and the Eureka Stockade. Next week, students will begin to learn about influential Australians who have stood up for their rights to create change.
