Poetry

Naomee Hoeboer of 7F wrote a series of poems during lockdown which reflect and observe relationship breakdowns. Naomee’s outlet during school closures has been writing to navigate her own and others’ feelings of intensity, dread and longing as a teenager.

He laughs his adorable laugh.

He smiles his beautiful smile.

He looks at you with his breathtaking eyes.

Oceans of blue in the sun,

A sea of green in darkness.

The feeling of love from him,

The feeling of being indestructible.

He’s a skater boy…in public,

Nothing and no one can stop him,

He WILL get what he wants.

He loves… in private,

Nothing and no one can stop him,

He WILL love you.

And you WILL love him back.

You know you shouldn’t fall,

But the way he looks at you,

Cares for you,

Laughs with you,

Cries with you,

You fall anyway.

Down into the darkness of a bottomless pit.

When you hit the bottom you’ll stop loving him.

Rock bottom. But there is no bottom.

You fall deeper and deeper,

While your mind digs the hole down and down.

There’s no way up,

You don’t want there to be a way up,

Calls every night, hanging out every day.

What more could you want?

It’s perfect.

One line, one sentence, 3 meaningful words.

“I love you…”

You drift apart,

Less calls,

Less hanging out.

Less I love you’s.

Less air to breathe the deeper you fall.

Your chest tight as elastic, except it’s going to snap.

Any minute now…

One line, one sentence, 3 empty words.

“I’m so sorry…”
