Dear families
Its been a challenging term and I’d like to thank you all for your perseverance during the remote learning period. Every family has contributed in a positive way to their child’s learning journey. Every teacher has provided learning content that is diverse and tailored to the individual needs of our students. This partnership between home and school has proven to be an effective one as we navigate each remote learning period.
We often hear the negative stories and anecdotes about remote learning, I’d like you all to take a moment and reflect on the positive stories. Our data has shown that there have been improvements across the board in literacy and numeracy. Student achievement and engagement has steadily improved over each remote learning period since the beginning of the Covid- 19 pandemic.
Teachers have reported that students have been focussed and engaged when working in differentiated and small group sessions online. Students are enjoying working on their personalised learning packs. Students are benefiting a great deal from the intensive sessions run by our excellent support team. Teachers have had the opportunity to work collaboratively each week and engage parents in the process.
Wellbeing Wednesday sessions have provided students with a chance to try something new, engage with the wider school community and feel connected. Students have reported that they have enjoyed the variety of the sessions and the opportunity to share this with their families.
Our whole school Wellbeing Team have worked to support and engage students on an ongoing basis. They have also provided services to support families in need.
Feel confident in the processes and know that your child is very much nurtured and supported by the school. All staff are working toward a positive transition back to onsite learning. We truly hope that we are back on the other side of the school holidays. Either way, we have plans in place to support both onsite and remote learning. Stay tuned for correspondence from Sam Luck our College Principal regarding Term 4 return.
Take care and have a restful school holiday break.
Thank you again for your collective efforts.

Primary Chinese Remote Learning Updates
Students and families have shown incredible resilience during this remote learning period. With so much going on in everyone’s lives, I am incredibly grateful for the ongoing support and participation in the learning of Chinese language and culture in the homes of families. I have also had the privilege to run short, immersive weekly Chinese sessions across different classes – an opportunity I do not take lightly, and would like to thank all the classroom teachers and students for welcoming me each week!
With Grade 3 and 4, they are introduced to 8 Chinese characters each week, and are in the process of creating their own picture dictionary. There were also simple videos available to help support the students’ at-home learning:

Here is some of the incredible work by the students:
With Grade 5 and 6, we had a little ‘Alien project.’ Every week, we learn simple vocabulary and phrases to build on our descriptions of our aliens.
Here are some of the unique aliens created by our students:
Once again, I would like to thank all students and families for your hard work and your engagement in our learning activities. I wish you a restful and meaningful term break.
Rest well, and see you soon.

Mid-Autumn Festival - Primary School Specialist Activities
Dear Collingwood College primary school students and families,
Mid-Autumn Festival (中秋节) is the second grandest festival in China after the Chinese New Year. In China, this Festival is celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month of the Chinese calendar, which falls in the middle of autumn. For the Gregorian calendar used in Australia, this festival falls on the 21st of September this year.
The day is also known as the Moon Festival, as at that time of the year the moon is believed to be at its fullest and brightest. The Chinese would worship the moon and appreciate the full moon on that day.
At Collingwood College, we pride ourselves at delivering a vibrant and immersive LOTE-Mandarin program, across our Reggio-Emilia inspired Main Program, and our Steiner Education Program. This year, we have decided to embrace the learning of the Chinese culture, with a collective effort from the different Specialists Teachers we have, here at Collingwood College.
There are FOUR different types of activities for students to choose from, that are inspired by the legends of the Mid-Autumn Festival. The activities are also in FOUR different categories: Movement, Food and Design, Arts and Crafts, and Performing Arts.
The activities are:
Create a target-shooting game, just like Houyi who shot down the 9 suns.
Create a Jade-Rabbit inspired bento / lunch / meal.
Make lanterns from materials found at home.
Attempt the ribbon dance, like the Moon Goddess who floated to the moon.
Here’s a video, compiling the beautiful work of our students, from Prep to Year 6.

Once again, a huge ‘THANK YOU’ to all students and families who participated in the Mid-Autumn Festival activities.
We love you, we miss you, and we wish you the happiest holidays with your family.
Lots of love,
The Primary Specialists Teachers
