A Look at Learning

From the LOP

Well done to all of our students in engaging and working in their Google Classrooms during our first week of remote learning.

Here are our Early Stage 1 students Zooming for the first time!! Well done Kindergarten.

We continue our reading focus whilst we are working from home. It is important that students read to an adult at least four times per week to help improve fluency, decoding and comprehension.

Here are some tips to  practice and help consolidate reading from home:

  • Looking at the book cover, reading the title and predicting what might happen in the story
  • Using finger pointing so that each word in the sentence is said
  • Saying the first sound in the word to help decode and read the whole word
  • Noticing any repeated sounds in the book …. Sh,wh,th,ch..
  • Pausing at full stops
  • Using any other special marks on the page - question marks, speech marks
  • Reading each sentence smoothly - like when we talk
  • Re reading any words or sentences to help them make sense
  • Using the pictures to help understand the story
  • Talking about the characters and what happened in the story
  • Breaking words down into syllables to determine the word
  • Breaking down longer sentences to help understand each part
  • Checking that the story makes sense by predicting what might happen next
  • Retelling the story or information to show understanding
  • Using clues from the story or information to understand hidden meanings

During Week 5, Stage 1 were busy learning about the concept of Area in  Mathematics. Here they are finding the area of Mrs Hogan’s mat.

Here is Stage 3 engaging in their MEG lesson on Chinese family trees! What a difference we have between our own family trees to that of our Chinese friends.
