Principal's Desk

Dear Parents,

This Friday we will celebrate `Grandparents / Special Persons Day’. Our classrooms will be open from 2.30pm-3.30pm beginning with a brief prayer service in the classroom. It will be an opportunity for grandparents / special persons to visit classrooms and participate in some activities. It is also an opportunity to give thanks and acknowledge these special and important people in the lives of our children. As Principal I have the privilege and pleasure of engaging with many of the Grandparents in our school community on a regular basis. I thoroughly enjoy having a chat at pick up or drop off time, or whole school events.

For many families, grandparents play a significant role in the lives of their grandchildren. We understand and appreciate that the role of the `grandparent’ is many and varied, but important nonetheless. In some families, grandparents are relied upon for school pick up and drop off, or being the taxi (or Uber!) driver for after school activities.  In other families, grandparents live further away and cherish the precious time when they make the journey to visit and note `how much you have grown’ since they saw you last. We also acknowledge that in some families grandparents are unable to fulfil such an active role in the lives of their grandchildren, due to  distance (overseas or interstate), health and many other factors. In their absence there are often `special people’ in the lives of our children who are present to fill the void, to provide the practical or emotional support required in childhood and adolescence.

This week is one small opportunity to say `thank you’ to these special people in our lives. Grandparents provide much more than `all care, no responsibility’! Grandparents and special people play a significant role in influencing, shaping and moulding their loved ones in support of our role as parents. As a Catholic community, we thank God for their love, guidance and support on their journey of life and faith.
