Innovation in the Lab

BEST

Having access to specialised equipment opens up endless possibilities in refining the lab pracs that we can offer here at the college. From crafting our own lab experiments to streamlining workflows, we're empowered to take science to the next level. Take a look at the examples below!

Fab Lab Laser Cutter

In a recent lab prac focused on Latent Fingerprint analysis for the CSI specialism, we successfully enhanced a well-known technique involving glass microscope slides for fingerprint handling. By employing leftover black acrylic pieces from the Fab Lab and utilising the laser cutter, I crafted distinct fingerprint plates and the results were fantastic. An additional perk was the environmentally friendly repurposing of offcuts from other projects!

Large Format Poster Printer

Throughout the lockdown period, I was able to source some great digital images. Upon returning to site, I used the large format printer to create posters for the BEST labs. I have also created a large wall mural of the rock cycle that students can capture an image of and annotate with their individual interpretations of the rock cycle.

3D Printing

In order to simplify and expedite the task of cleaning microscope slides, I found a 3D printer design for a tray tailored to hold these slides. After customizing the measurements to fit perfectly, I printed the tray. This innovative solution now enables me to clean and rinse numerous slides simultaneously!

Acrylics Bending Machine

Microcentrifuge tube holders are required for an upcoming Microbiology lab session. Once again using leftover materials from the Fab Lab, we have crafted entire class sets at a fraction of the cost of purchasing!
