Beaumaris Fossil Expo

On Sunday 6 August, Beaumaris Secondary College hosted the Beaumaris Fossil Expo.  We were thrilled to be able to support the annual Bayside Earth Sciences Society Inc., and MESAC who ran this important community event. It was an incredible opportunity for fossil enthusiasts, science buffs and curious minds to explore the ancient world of Beaumaris.

Highlights of the Expo included:

  • Engaging speakers who are experts in Beaumaris fossils
  • Impressive private collections of national significance
  • Showcase of Australia’s only model of Pelagornis, a prehistoric toothed bird with a wingspan of nearly 6 meters, that inhabited Beaumaris around 5.5 million years ago.  This was on display in our Resource Centre.
  • Exclusive collection of Fossil Turtle fragments, never before seen by the public
  • The display of the partial backbone of a 6-meter juvenile whale
  • Experts in the field sharing their knowledge and identifying fossils Palaeontologists such as Emeritus Professor John Buckeridge, Dr. Erich Fitzgerald (Senior Curator Vertebrate Palaeontology Museum Victoria), Dr. Fearghus McSweeney and Ben Francischelli
